Remove contacts group "on my iPhone"

I just upgraded from 4.3.3 to 5.1.1 and enabled iCloud for the first time. Till now I was syncing contacts from my computer, and I enabled iCloud syncing and all worked well. I made sure iTunes is set to sync from iCloud instead of the computer.

However, now I have an empty group in contacts called "on my iPhone" and I can't delete it. What do I do to remove it? Everythin else is great, Calendar and notes sync to iCloud with no extra groups, it's only contacts.

Thanks!

Scracthed my head on this one for a while until reading lexohares' post. iPhone 5 and iOS6 users should know that with the current facebook integration with contacts, groups will still show up to select between icloud and facebook. But more importantly in orde for me to remove my From My iPhone group i had to signt out of facebook integration from settings, wipe contacts stored on phone (includes deselcting " my info") and uncheck and recheck icloud contacts syncing.

But hey it was worth it.

Same problem, old Mac contacts long since gone. This worked for me too. Thanks.

One thing to note, in my case on an iphone 4S with IOS 6.0.1, when I turned my contacts in icloud back on it asked if I wanted to merge. I don't think it did anything since it went very fast, but all the old mac contacts were gone on the iPhone afterwards. So this might also be a solution if you have different contacts locations and you want to merge them into one.

Here's what I did. Went to Facebook settings and turned off Contacts, then went to iCloud and turned off contacts. Then turned iCloud contacts back on and finally Facebook contacts back on. Finally "On my iPhone" is gone. I didn't even realize it was there until I noticed it was my default place to add contacts.

Thanks all.

I found that if you go to iCloud preferences under the Mail, Contact, Calendars in iPhone settings and uncheck "Contacts" and turn them off and then re-check "Contacts" again all your contacts are in one place without the All on my iPhone or All on iCloud groups.

Thank you. So many people thought I was nuts. I believe this issue came from early iPhone users address book accounts that carried over from TIGER. YEP TIGER. Lexohare you are very BRAVE to turn off contacts. You saved me hours of organizing 6 years of contacts. 🙂

I use contacts sync for gmail it will sync your contacts and delete them off your iphone or your gmail account also so be cautious and not to delete your gmail contacts aside from that you might accidentally erase your gamil contacts its a good and useful app for wiping out your iphone contacts and resyncing your contacts without itunes even. Yes it can delete your contacts and you must be vary of the fact and not make wrong mistakes so thats on you to make the right choice the app is contacts sync here is a link to it in the app store.https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/contacts-sync-for-google-gmail/id454390333?mt=8& ls=1

Im just trying to be helpful and provide a faster and easier way to do something that shouldnt take a whole lot of time to do without being to difficlut. I hope i was helpful.

I usually sign out of my gmail and delete the app after im finished so i dont have future syncing issues because this app does have a complex sync feature built into it. SO to avoid further compexities i just either sign out of my goole account or delete the app after im finished with updating my contacts.
