I am the new owner of the Panasonic HDC-TM900. It has several recording format options. I want the best HD quality available. I understand the 1080/60p option, drawbacks so I am looking at the next best options for full HD:
HA 1920
HG 1920
HX 1920
HE 1920
Need help understanding the differences of these formats as the manual thinks I know what I am doing.

The 60p option gives you the best quality (with the drawbacks etc) 28 Mbps.1920 X 1080 progressive.
The next best is HA 1920 which gives you 17 Mbps, HG 13Mbps, HX 9 Mbps, HE 5Mbps, all 1920 X 1080 and all at 60i (interlaced.
The 60i formats will log and transfer in FCP. The 60p will have to be converted with third party software.

Looking for someone that has had experience with the Panasonic Avccam importer application. Want to know if it better, faster, same quality as log&Transfer ProRes 422.

The AVCCAM importer is a plug in that allows you to view the MTS files in Quicktime Player and also to be able to convert them in Compressor or MPEG Streamclip. I only use this plug in when I have footage shot at 50fps ( I'm in Pal Land). When I shoot 25fps I alweays use Log And Transfer in FCP and would advise you to do the same.

Thanks. The Log&Transfer is such a time consuming step to handle all the AVCHD clips, select in / outs, convert to prores 422, label, etc. I thought this Importer would do it all in one step, join all the AVCHD clips and have the same quality as proRes 422.
Panasonic HDC-HS900
iMovie 11 Version 9.0.4
With iMovie open, I connect the camera to my macbookpro and on the camera screen I am asked me to select:
PC
or
RECORDER
I select PC and no iMovie dialogue boxes open, only iPhoto opens. I close down iPhoto. There is no way I can import the 1080/50p (.MTS) files I have just recorded via FILE>IMPORT>MOVIES>AVCHD>BDMV>STREAM because these are greyed out. If I recorded in iFrame, I can see the files no problem?

I Have been using clip wrap. Google "clip wrap". It works great to convert to ProRes
Does this mean you cannot edit these files with iMovie straight out of the camera?! Now I am confused 😕
I Do not know as I use FCP not iMovie . I also record in 1080/60p.
