How to exit settings on Nano?

Just working through using a Nano Touch 8GB. Manual says I should be able to touch and hold anywhere on screen that is not a menu or option in order to exit to HOME. But when I get into the settings menu (and other places, like the clock) there doesn't seem to be any 'free' space to click and hold to get back to the home page. The only way I've found is to plug into my computer and then eject again to get back. There has to be a way to get back to the home screen!! Please help this nano newbie! I miss the home button from my iTouch!!
