I think you misunderstand. The OS is not in the cloud, you're restore partition is still on your disk. You can access Internet Recovery in the event of a complete disk failure to get the factory OS back. It's actually quite a nice feature, since most people lose their disks that came with a machine.

You can use iCloud to sync your documents, but that's opt-in. You aren't forced to use it.

We called that "System 6" back then. We've come a long way since then. The new stuff is nice, you haven't given it a fair chance.

And you DO have an ethernet port, you just need a dongle to get to it. I can't imagine a better time in Mac history when a single port (Thunderbolt) could be used for Target-Disk, a Firewire port, an ethernet port, a DVI port, an HDMI port, a VGA port, etc... Sure, it's one more thing in your bag, but it's makes the laptop so much more versitile.

1) No it isn't. More people are installing or wanting to install 10.8.x as Apple has limited the feature set upgrades on even the last OS X version, Snow Leopard, before the Downloaded only version of OS X making it so you are almost Forced to upgrade the OS or to a New Mac computer to get them. Funny part is they make some of those newer features work on Windows of several different versions, Back to XP I think. But not for a 2+ year old Mac OS X. Go Figure.

2) Fax, A Modems inside computer went out years ago. To my knowledge most all computer sold in the last 5-7 years have not included a modem and for most it isn't even an option.

3) If you Just Bought a iMac it isn't NEW. The newest models do not have a DVD drive. Even if it was New In The Box it is not a NEW Model.

4) Right. The only thing I do in the Clouds is Syncing my contacts and calendar with Google across my Android phone and my computers.

5) Then Most people should learn how to actually run a Computer. If they did there wouldn't be as many problems posted on all the internet forums.

6) Then it is time to stop using a computer as ALL of them are going this way. MS is even trying to go this way. They have Stopped selling Full versions of Windows and have implemented the Windows Store, or whatever they call it, in Win 8 and the Win Phone 8 OSs.

Plus most people don't know how to do this geeky partitioning stuff. They want it simple.

Install your software, repair from boot up disk, be happy.

Yes it was System 6, force of habit I used OS... sorry!

Apple told me it was new... perhaps it's a 'leftover' from a previous iteration of the hardware, but it is still new.

It is not used.

I buy cars like this too at the end of the year -- it's cheaper.

This means my 2008 Tundra has been on the road only since 2009, and has only 30,000 miles on it.

So lucky me... I get to spend $200 on a TB hub if I want to connect my laptop to an HDMI monitor and hardwire LAN at the same time? Excellent.

i'm using this usb 3.0 hub+gigabit ethernet adapter on my macbook air. that would give you your hardwire LAN and free up your thunderbolt to drive the video.

Haha... thanks for the response, but I was just painting an example. A more realistic issue for me if I purchased one of the new Macs is that I'd want to run the HDMI monitor and my FW800 audio interface together.

actually the retina MBP has a separate HDMI port in addition to the thunderbolt port.
