The retina display MBPro is the one WITHOUT a superdrive; however, both the 15" and 13" NON-RETINA display MBPs still have a super/drive. I prefer to watch my blueray DVD movies in flight or when my flight is delayed or cancelled and there are no "hot-spots" so I'm a little old fashioned in wanting to be sure I can go "old school" and watch a movie or review a sales training session or seminars that were purchased on DVD from a couple years ago. Backwards compatability is important to me I guess until I am forced to take the time and burn ALL of my library to digital. Hope this helps! 😎
No one is forcing you to buy apple products, please complain somewhere where it is appropriate.
yes M'Lord, sorry M'Lord
Dear All
An interesting discussion. I am presently waiting for my 2007 MBP to be returned with a new (expensive) logic board - yes, the NVIDIA one that lasts four years and a couple of months. Whilst waiting, I looked at the MBPs on offer and found myself confused. A retina display with an HDMI slot but no superdrive and a "normal" MBP with superdrive but no HDMI slot. I then discover the mini-display port, now called thunderbolt, can be used with an adaptor to give HDMI out. Presumably all these now include audio as well as video. So why has the retina got an HDMI out if one of its thunderbolt ports could be used with an adaptor and the MBP with a superdrive on which to play DVDs to a TV does not have a dedicated HDMI?
I am sure some of you will be repeating a few points that have already been said about this. However, the reason I have a portable is because I travel around the world with it. I do not have a superdrive equipped second Mac to share a drive. I spend a long time without wi-fi and internet or other means of accessing the outside world. That is not entirely true as I usually have access via a PC and satellite but not with my MBP. There are comments about using the Recovery mode in times of trouble, as opposed to a DVD, but I believe that requires internet access. Many of you make comments here about this situation but are living in the ideal world of constant and fast access to all the good things in life with instant and constant access to clouds in the sky and Netflix. Some of us do not have that, require a superdrive and will simply have to forego a retina display. On the other hand, we can get the upgraded non-glossy display and save some cash!
TY
In case you have not seen this, and you by chance have two computers . . check this out for sharing a CD drive with your shiny new MacBook PRO w Retina Display . . saved my bacon already

How do you remote install? this sounds like my only option. I have an older version of this computer that DOES HAVE a CD slot.
On the computer that does have an optical drive, go to System Preference > Sharing and turn on DVD or CD Sharing. Then insert the optical disk you want to share.
On the computer without the optical drive, open a Finder window, in the sidebar the optical disk should be there. Sometimes it takes a while. Use it like you would an optical disk in the computer.

Why?
Just purchase the external Superdrive and move on. You have a unique, non-common requirement and Apple has provided a unique solution.
If I may ask, laundry bleach- would that be by bluetooth, iCloud or firewire?
The sharing is done over a Local Area Network - Ethernet or Wifi. I suppose it could be done with FireWire as well but I've never tried it.
Cool, Thanks!
I hate it so much! I've got the previous model but last month when my Dad and I were looking forward to buy my siblings a new MBP as well, we noticed that the latest model didn't have the CD Drive so he bought the previous model. As some other said, if you want lightweight then just buy the MB Air. I hope Apple notice that and re-include it on the next computer model. Because I guarantee you that sales went down.

You have figures to back that up or just a guess?
Thank you for your well-tempered and thorough posting. We bought the 15" laptop with retina display, not knowing there was no drive. Microsoft doesn't allow software downloads so we're stuck.
Is there a USB external drive we can buy, to your knowledge, that allows download of software that
will allow us to spark it up from which we can drag and drop the MSOffice installation files?

You can download MS Office from Microsoft or many online vendors, or you can buy ($79) an external superdrive for your Retina. You can also use just about any other external DVD drive with it.
