How do you gray out a clip and highlight a specific point or object

I'm producing training videos and I want to highlight certain items in clips. I don't know exactly what it's called, but I want all of the clip to gray out except for the thing being isolated.

Quit FCPX.

Move the sc_magnifier (and all its contents) to the desktop (temporarily).

Open sc_magnifer folder and Move the Magnifier folder into the Instructional Aids folder.

You can delete the sc_magnifier folder if you like (other than the installer information in the Magnifier.png image, there's no further use for it.)

Restart FCPX.

Find the effect in FCPX in the Effects browser:

Drag the effect from the browser onto a clip into the storyline. Change parameters in the Video Inspector on the right side of the canvas. The Magnifier effect should be at the top of the list.

Ian,

I think I am making some headway, but still not working. The correct Movies file was on my Desktop, named Movies alias. I haven't the slightest idea how it got there. I moved it into my Home Directory file. I repaired the Permissions and trashed FCPX Preferences. Here is the screen shot. I notice that; Compositions, Generators, Titles and Transitions folders are empty.

no...

I don't know what's going on. (Did you start with a trial version of FCPX by any chance?? just curious... It's odd that you had an alias to Movies on the desktop.)

Keep trying to straighten this out.

In the meantime: an alternative location to install the Magnifier effect template and others is:

mainHardDrive/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro/Templates/Effects/<create category>/Magnifier folder here.

This is not Apple's recommended user install location... but it should absolutely work.

Ok. That folder should have been created when you installed FCPX, or at least when you downloaded and installed "Additional Content" for FCPX. I would consider that you have a faulty installation of FCPX.

So, I'm out of my depth on this one. I would recommend trashing FCPX and re-download it from the App Store. Maybe you'll get a complete installation the next time. But I also recommend you get an answer from somebody who knows better than I do.
