How do you gray out a clip and highlight a specific point or object

I'm producing training videos and I want to highlight certain items in clips. I don't know exactly what it's called, but I want all of the clip to gray out except for the thing being isolated.

Normally Motion Templates are in your Movies folder. There should be a folder called Motion Templates. Inside it are Compositions, Effects, Generators, Titles, and Transitions. The Motion templates should be in there.

At the root level of the system drive is a folder called Library. In it is Application Support>Final Cut Pro. In there are three folders, Compositions, Effects, and Transitions. Motion templates available to all users are in there.

The Layouts folder is in home Library>Application Support>Final Cut Pro folder. This is not where the Motion Templates belong.

Tom,

The Application Support folder has no Final Cut folder, only Final Cut Express and Final Cut Studio.

I guess I will have to take out my Snow Leopard disk and re-install.

Any advice on the proper way to do this?

Reinstalling Snow Leopard is not likely to solve your problems. You'll end up wasting a lot of time.

The lack of the aforementioned folder has nothing to do with it. It just means that it has not been created yet.

For sure, you never downloaded the "additional content" - that is something that is done from inside FCP X, from the menu

Final Cut Pro->Download Additional Content...

As a side effect, the folder "/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro" will be automatically created, as this where this additional content will be stored.

I'm at my wits end! If I create a movie in my internal HD, it is stored in my movies folder ok; but FCPX will not recognize what is in the Motion Templates folder; located in the same Movies folder.

I have trashed and reloaded FCPX three times and re-installed Snow Leopard and updated.

The path is; My Home Directory /Movies /Motion Templates /Effects /SC Effects /SC Magnifier

It seems to be right, assuming that the spaces before each slash "/" are NOT part of the names of the folders

Have you tried adding other effects, titles or transitions?

Some have their own installers, which means that they will be placed automatically in the proper folders;

doing this might help in figuring out if everything is really in the right place: then you should be able to compare the locations.

a manually created Folder has no suffix (left screen shot)

a FCPX/Motion generated Folder has a '.localised' suffix, although on my German OS its name is Effects, not Effekte ...

just cmd-i your Effects Folder, and add that to your folder < fingers crossed >
