None of the updates could be installed. Kernel panic

Today I tried to install the two updates that apple had in store for me:

IPhoto

Thunderbolt

The installer asked me to reboot and I said yes.

After a while, the installer said:

None of the updates could be installed.

I pressed the only button: restart

After staring at the canvas background for over 5 minutes, I hard-rebooted the iMac.

Now I get a kernel panic when I boot!!!

What to do?

iMac 2011

Mac os x. Latest update

Just want to second this solution.

I had a MBP 2011 running 10.7.4, got the Software Update, which included the Thunderbolt 1.2 update. Went for it, got the kernel panic and followed BoySetsTheFire's instruction and am back again.

What astonishingly bad release testing by Apple. This is going to send a lot of people into the Genius Bars...

Yeah, I am joining the long list of people who tried to install the updates and could not boot afterwards. I have reinstalled Lion and am currently running my Time Machine Back-up (that I definitely need to do more regularly - made a whole lot of changes on my Mac over the weekend that will be gone even after this). 😢

There must be a major bug in the update! Very frustrating! I recommend to SKIP it to all those who haven't updated yet! Or at least, make sure you have a new time machine back-up around so your entire data will not be lost!

I can't even do that, if I boot from the recovery drive and then attempt to reinstall it says it could not verify my installation contact apple care as laptop was upgraded from snow leopard and then the server tools installed. If I try and boot from an original media install dvd for snow or lion it kernal panics so I can't even do a complete refresh install.

I too have had the same problem. Have followed BoySetsTheFire's solution and have reinstalled Lion. This has worked for me although it's taken me about 4 hours to get going again. I'm not sure what has caused the problem - I have an iMac that ran the same software update including AirPort Utility 6.1, iTunes 10.6.3, Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2 and all was fine. The MacBook Pro was the problem and had the Kernel Panic. I'm not sure, but I think there may have been an iPhoto update on the MacBook that was not there on the iMac??

But I'm up and running again with the MacBook and everything seems to be ok. Backing up with Time Machine now and fingers crossed!

Update: Have just tried to open iPhoto and it won't run at all, sending report to Apple. I think now that this is the software update with the problem??

i have had to go back to the original install cds that came with the mac to be able to boot into an install that works, and using disk utlity to backup the specific folders I had been working on since the last backup at the weekend. Then I can wipe the hard drive and reinstall but it won't be complete till I get home and have access to my backup drive.

None of the updates could be installed. Kernel panic
