It is the nature of the device that Apple chose, or had available to use (depending on who you believe).
Thankfully it appears that they have upgraded the camera in the new edition out today. It is now a Facetime HD.
You can use an external camera to increase quality. I've tried it and it works fairly well.
please can you provide me with any suggestions on the external camera, most of them doesnt even get detected .....to my surprise .....
i agree they might have made it to a super HD with retina 3D ,100080 p ,or blah blah blah .....but how does that help us .....I have already brought this MBA......
I think they have also made some changes on OS its now a mountain lion which people with old laptops cant download so basically people who brought laptop earlier this year had a rip off.....what a joke
I'm not saying I can recommend it, because I haven't kept up on external cameras...but I hooked up an older Microsoft LifeCam, and it worked straight away. I just had to configure the apps preferences to use it instead of the built in camera. I was going to throw the camera away, as I only had preveiosly used it on a laptop I no longer use, but I thought I would give it a try, just for grins.
I see MS makes external laptop cameras all the way up to 1080p HD, but I am unfamiliar with the actual picture quality.
BTW, Mountain Lion is not available to the public yet (due in July). It's still in Beta.

(1) http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
(Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD." Regardless of the name of your built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)
(2) However, first try restarting your Mac, modem and wireless router.
(3) If restarting does not solve your problem, quit all internet connected apps except the browser and check your internet speed with http://speedtest.net/
Slow internet or having multiple computers, a game box, VOIP box, or even multiple apps on one Mac sharing your bandwidth can cause poor video chat quality.
Whoever you video with should also check their speed. Video quality depends on speed of the internet connection at BOTH ends.
(4) You can test your camera's video quality with Photo Booth.
If the picture it makes is better than your FaceTime video, your camera is NOT your problem.
If the images shown by your camera are all blurry, check to see if the lens cover (near the green light) needs to be gently cleaned with a soft cloth -- NO LIQUIDS.
Mine is HD and is horrible, just had the top replaced at Apple thinking that was the issue but still grainy and not bright colors like my Iphone or Ipad...
What are the specs on the Macair camera and any other issues out there as this seems to be a major issue across the internet forums...1500 min-lap top!
