1st gen iPad and iOS 6

I'm a first gen iPad user. I don't understand why Apple is completely neglecting us. I can understand holding off on the cooler stuff for the newer iPads but we are the people who helped the iPad turn into what it has. Atleast give us and updated email, safari and stores. Why not? Androids have had those features for awhile. Just give us the second best thing out their. Don't let your three year old product fall behind the pack of android tablets. We paid to much for that. This is an Apple product, people respect that. When people ask us if they should buy an iPad, we don't want to have to say "buy an Android, they care about you even when your device is three years old, Apple forgot about us."

how can u say that dude they give the update to the 3gs but not the ipad 1 mean while the ipads hardware and every thing is better apple just decided to be ******* on that if steve jobs were alive then there would be ios 6 for every idevice

I don't think we can say Steve Jobs would have definitely done anything differently. iOS devices were left behind with previous updates and Steve was alive for those.

The differences between the iPhone 3GS and iPad first generation have been hashed out over the past few days. While we do not definitively know what has caused the iPad first generation to be left behind, a plausible technical case around hardware constraints has been discussed. More details may come to light over the next few months.

I have an iPad 1 myself and I was devastated when iOS 6 wouldnt be on it. But up then I looked at the features. You don't need the features on the iPad. My iPad is wifi. Yours may be 3G. I don't need a new maps cause the iPad isn't 3G, passbook isnt good cause I'm not gonna carry my huge iPad to a movie, plane, store, etc. , a new mail would be nice, we don't need FaceTime because no camera and all the other features don't work on iPad or I don't need them. You are gonna have to deal with no iOS 6, and I am too.

You bring up an excellent point, and I would like to expand on it in response to those who are saying "Why does the iPhone 3GS get iOS 6 but not the iPad 1?"

As you pointed out: No camera, no FaceTime. No 3G, no use for Map directions. No, let's look at the iPhone 3GS:

It is a phone so it can take advantage of the Do Not Disturb and other calling features.

It has a cellular connection so it can take advantage of the turn-by-turn directions.

It is a device that you carry in your pocket, so people would have more use for Passbook.

The only feature that won't work is FaceTime due to the lack of the front camera.

But in conclusion, there are just too many features that would be left out for Apple to make iOS 6 for the original iPad. Thank you for bringing up this point.

It is unfortunate that Apple chose to link their navigation system to devices that access the cellular system, especially since the cell system, of itself, is not required. The gps receiver is the actual requirement. If they were to allow it on an iPod Touch or a WiFi-only iPad, the owner could obtain an external gps receiver and utilize Apple's system instead of Garmin/Tom-Tom/Magellan.

Yes. In fact Magellan has one. I just think that it's unfortunate that the Apple version does not include the locally-stored maps. It doesn't affect me because I wouldn't consider a nav system on my iPad (too large) or my iPod Touch (too small). I had a 4.3" Magellan unit until last week. I replaced it because Magellan wasn't providing updated maps for it. I now have a 4.3" Garmin unit.

I, on the other hand, prefer the way to have the maps downloaded on the fly. Doesn't tie up space on my device and is more likely to be up to date. And, the fewer devices I have to carry, the better. I do love my Garmin running watch, though! 🙂
