iPad
Right. iPad 2 and The New iPad only.
I don't understand why. I saw its gonna be on the iPhone 3GS (which I have) but not my original iPad. My phone is older than my pad.
Doesn't seem to make sense
its because apple have forgoten to take care of its customers. shame on them. i for one will not be buying a new ipad ever again. this is a disgrace.
I'm also slightly annoyed about this. The biggest reason is likely to be relative performance of the iPad, and the installed base. There will be many more 3GS phones out there still in use than iPad first gen.
There were three major features announced for iOS 6 that are performance related.
All of these will place higher loads on the machine, and may in some respect be reliant on certain cellular or wifi chip capabilities, as well as raw CPU and graphics peformance.
I'm still surprised that the 3GS might be considered more capable than the iPad first gen, but I think that then comes down to the size of the installed base. Many iPad 1 users have already swapped out
My preference would be to see support for the iPad 1, but with certain features disabled if they can't get the performance they need. 3D maps are going to be nice, but not exactly critical. However, its not clear whether they will bring the new iOS 6 map tiles (from Apple) to iOS 5 - its potentially doable without any software change, as its server side. Although they use Google maps, I'm not sure that they rely on Google servers to provide the images.
Also, we are still some way off the release date, and its possible that they will do more optimising of iOS 6 that will allow the iPad first gen to get an update including most of the features. They may just be holidng back at the moment based on what they know is good.
I was considering a MB Air purchase soon, but I'm now in the position of thinking that I will defer that if I have a more compelling reason to purchase an iPad update. That won't happen until Jan 2013 at the earliest, when we can expect an iPad 4th gen upgrade anyway.
Ok, just checked the small print, and for 3GS users, they won't be getting:
Flyover (3D maps)
Turn-by-turn navigation
iPhone 4 users will not get those either.
Siri is iPhone 4S and iPad 3 only.
Shared photo streams is not for 3GS
Facetime is 4S and iPad 3 only.
VIP, VIP list and smart mailboxes is not for 3GS
That's the end of the small print (scroll all the way to the bottom of http://www.apple.com/uk/ios/ios6/)
So given the restrictions on 3GS, I still don't see why iPad first gen is missing out on the OS completely.
Oh please, stop the drama queen act.
The reason why iOS 6 is on the 3GS is because as of right now, Apple is still selling the 3GS directly; this is not the case for iPad 1. Think about it that way.
I don't think a scarce two years software updates is very long!
Iv been a long time customer an I don't like to be left out.
Like on windows I think it should be up to the customer if they want to update or not.
Now you are setting restrictions for your loyal customers Apple, and I don't like it at all!
Bring ios6 also to the original ipad, or else you will loose atleast one good customer!
I am thinking about it but still don't like it.
Like on windows it should be up to the customer if they want the update or not.
Now Apple is deciding for me that my original ipad is not up to date for ios6, and I dont like it!
Smells like some form of planned obsolescence to force me to buy new.
Well, that doesnt work for me. I don't consider my ipad that old!
I think one point ppl are missing is the hardware issue. Apple doesn't intend to do this but with all of the newer hardware comming things change plus the fact that iPad 1 will be a great device in one aspect that is maps it will still use google maps while I have to use the new maps which I can tell you I do not like.. And don't forget there will always be a work around for the iPad 1.. I think the iPad 1 is going to be one of those sought after items because it wont support iOS 6 and people will still want iOS 5 that seems to be the way it always works out in the end.. So for all of you iPad 1 users it's still one **** of a device. I'm thinking of getting another 1 myself....
Disgusted that Apple is trying to force their early adopters into purchasing a new ipad. these are your biggest fans Apple, and you have just convinced me to get An....other device!
No one is trying to make you purchase a new device. Continue happily using your original iPad on iOS 5.
Then why limit the new features i am able to access! the one thing apple was doing correctly was allowing users free upgrades to the latest software, but greed seems to have got the better of them! the picture upload feature is what i have been looking for and almost went to another tablet to get... looks like i have now been given my marching orders!
If the reason the Ipad 1 isnt getting the latest sotware is because it is no longer on sale it just proves apples GREED!!!
The real issue is not the features (although they would be nice to have of course) but the lack of security updates only two years after launch. Windows XP launched in 2001 and security updates will be provided up to 2014. Apple must expect us to bin our iPad1s and buy new ones. Kind of makes a mockery of their environmental policy.
