Which one? I'm talking about the one that is officially provided by google (the one that recently changed into a red box with a play logo on my fourth gen iPad). Sure, the one that comes with the first gen iPad (the one whose icon looks like an antique TV) still works, but true to the icon design it lacks a lot of useful feature, like sorting the search results or closed captioning.

Btw, the one that comes with the first gen iPad is not fully working either- I can no longer sign in to my Google account from it, meaning I can't view my subscriptions or favorites. It barely works, but doesn't fully work, in addition to being dated and horribly crippled.

A first generation iPad with 64GB, Wifi, cellular which costs $850 new is worth $75 with that trade in. Given I could hardly use the thing for about year or so because of Wifi problems, it dropped the wifi over and over every 5-10 minutes, the expense of buying two routers trying to work around the problem and the short OS life of this device, a better more satisfying experience would be to back over it with the car on the way to the mall to purchase a Microsoft 8 product. Yeah, it is an ugly interface, battery life ***** due to multi apps running, all kinds of back support tasks in the OS, (it really isn't a tablet OS is it and there is a reason IOS is a detuned Linux OS), but I rather live with an extension cord and that ratty Non-Modern phone UI of Microsoft, the poorly cobbled, heavy as sin system. I can hold my nose and use it, knowing it will not be obsolete in a blink of an eye. Interestingly there is a lawsuit on that 1st gen cellular plan, was screwed there, too.

I just tried to download 6 new apps, everyone displayed a "Please update to 6.1.", so in a very crappy mood and will be looking for a Black Friday deal without a half eaten Apple.

Ponder this..

I wonder what happens if you back a first gen iPad up to "The Cloud" and Apple has deleted or is not carrying the older apps below 6.0? Is this coming? My understanding is a Clould backup doesn't backup apps, just your data, apps are pulled back from iTunes store, lovely.

Got a Target store near you? They will trade you a $200 gift card for your iPad 1. You can use it towards anything you want to buy.

I never had a WiFi issue with my iPad 1 and the person I sold it to never had a WiFi problem with it so this sounds like a personal issue.

Apple is starting a program where older versions of apps are being kept on line so long as the developer is willing to do so. When you attempt to download an app that will not work with your version it will give you a message that an older version is available and ask if you want to download it.

No, it doesn't back up your apps to iCloud. But you can transfer all apps to your computer and then back up your computer which you should be doing anyway.

My iPad was one of the very first ones delivered, ordered the first day and checking old threads you will find many people had issues with the Wifi and were very, very unhappy campers. We did not imagine this problem. The point is, it wasn't a pleasant experience waiting on Apple to say it was a problem, then taking their sweet time working on it, finishing that up, they then dumping the first generation support. This was just too short of life span for a $850 device. Getting back to the wifi, out of desperation waiting for a fix, I changed out routers. It seem to dislike home Verizon routers the most. I bridged the Verizon router long ago, it has no function other then a connecting, this router is connected to coax not Cat cable, you can force Verizon to use Cat cable off their box, but they do not like too because it messes up their TV listing service which requires coax, you can not run both, I forget, not care why. Wiring up a Cisco router behind the "bridged mode" Verizon router helped.

All a moot point, the trade in is no deal, if you take the time to check it out, if my iPad is only $75 I am sure the other models which are below it will be much less, you would be better off selling on EBay, as I said, I am done with iPads, better to go with a keyboard-less laptop poorly masquerading as a tablet. There is just more value in it over the long haul.

I was in line for the first day of the release of the iPad 1 with someone else (actually wasn't going to buy one). We both bought AT&T models. We never had any issue with them. I traveled a lot with mine that year and must have connected with at least 100 WiFi hotspots and I never had a failure. Neither did Sam. I sold mine to my friend Judah and he never had a problem with his. But if you do a search for any portable device and WiFi you will find that ALL of them have lots of posts with people with problems.

I do admit I never used a Verizon router. I also didn't have to wait for Apple.

Judah took his 64 GB WiFi + Cellular AT&T iPad to Target on Wednesday and they took it and gave him a $200 gift card. Great deal for him, he only paid me $100 for it. The deal ends on November 9, 2013 so hurry if you are going to use it.

not $75 but $200. yes normally most places like best buy or target give $75. they would have normally gave me $60 for my ipad 1 32gb. but i just got $200 for it. i bought it used from cowboom for $200 (and i think i even had a coupon from dealnews for a bit more off the total). so i basically got a free ipad for 2 years!

today is the last day for this promotion. if you trade it in on sunday then yes you will get $75. i hope you read this in time. but if not, not my problem since you are too stubborn to read what we are saying.

I understand your unhappiness over this. I don't think it's an unreasonable length of time, however -- the iPad 1 had a very old processor, far weaker than the modern iPad, which has 64-bit and are twice as fast as the previous models. There's an extra processor, so it can keep track of a number of things even while it's asleep. In such a time, Apple is faced with a dilemma: the old iPad 1 will not run the modern systems very well at all. It does run up to iOS 5, I belive. We're in the 5th generation now.

Generally speaking, Apple does keep the owners of older models in the loop. But when the OS will really not deliver what you want, they cut it off. The iPad 1 still works, and very well. Just with a smaller circle of apps. You might try to buy iPad 4s or minis on eBay...
