For those wondering, Google is no different on Android devices. Google says they will provide OS updates for 15 months after the devices release date for any Android device. That is also dependent upon the service provider that you go with.

Like with Apple, there will eventually be apps that no longer work with the OS version running on that Android device that you have. It happens with Android and Apple, get used to it.

hexonxonx - It's not the OS that I have beef with... It's spending over $1,000 for a device in 2010 that now, after only 3 years, has apps that won't work on it. If it were only a $200 or $300 dollar device I would expect it to be obsolete sooner. But not for something that costs as much as the first iPad sold for. I expect a lot more life out of a product that costs that much. I've yet to have that happen on my 4 year old Android device that I only paid $300 for. After seeing how well apps don't fail to update even if the OS is a bit old, I totally migrated off iOS for Android (Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet and Samsung Galaxy Note II Phone) and haven't looked back. The cost for the devices are more than 50% less expensive than Apples and now no more app issues (plus I now have a SD cards, IR remote, styles and way more features at fraction of the price Apple charges). I now realize how I made a really bad mistake with Apple by looking at the label and not looking at features, price and longevity of the investment.

bu they still work.

(effectively rendering them obsolete and many useless).

So these apps no longer work or they still work?

I have an iPad 1 and every app on it still works fine.

I have yet to find an Android app that does this with any version of it’s OS.

But some apps on a newer version don't work with older versions of Android

Another issue is that some apps are simply not available at all for the original iPad. For example, I want to start streaming NetFlix, and the only app they offer requires OS6.

The current Netflix app in the store requires iOS 6.

However, if you purchase the Netflix app using iTunes, you can then download it from the store on your iPad (don't sync it using iTunes) and it will ask if you want to download a version comatible your iPad 1.

Well that is a shame, and after selling 170 million first generation ipads they refuse to build an update for them. I recenttly bought one second hand, in very good condition but the usability is very limited, I can't download and install everyday apps like Twitter or Faceboook, I'm an editor in training and can't get decent editing apps either, the device continues to indicated that I need to install iOS 6.0 or higher. Apple Inc., I hope you're doing something about this, seriously dude.
