i bought the ipad1 at the time because it had many features that i wanted.

curiously those features still work, battery life is good, and screen looks great.

no-one promised endless upgrades and ios2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

O2 software keeps asking me for an update that is not required, but otherwise my ipad has exceeded expectations.

why would i want ios6 or possibly think that i might be entitled to it? weird!

You people absolutely make me lose my mind with your flawed and incredibly, well, STUPID logic.

Go ahead, move on over to android. Have fun. In a year when Android moves in and simply drops supporting your device, and new apps can't be installed because you aren't running candy cane or moon pie or snowball, whatever daffy name they're using at the time, Apple is going to look REALLY GOOD then.

Apple supported the iPad 1 through 2 complete overhauls of the OS. It supported iOS 3, 4 and 5. ALL of 5.

The 3GS would NEVER have gotten iOS 6 support if it was not actively being sold as a new phone on a contract!

The only way to buy an original iPad is through the refurb store. You can also buy older iPod touches that won't support iOS 6.

I wouldn't doubt that the first gen iPad COULD run iOS 6, but simply put the first gen iPad has been put out to pasture. It's not sold as new. It's not available from apple in any way but refurbished. It's silly to expect constant upgrades on an older device. You can't look at it as a "The 3GS is older and it's being supported, waaaaaah!!" Mentality. It's simply that the 3GS is still sold as new to customers, and anything currently being sold as new needs iOS 6.

End of story.

Cry until you pee, it won't help.

Bash apple all you want and threaten to move to a Windows or Android or Whatever tablet, but realize that there is LESS of a chance that device will be supported even remotely as long as Apple has supported ANY of their devices.

And when you realize that, tell me, what then? Will you finally eat crow then?!? Or will you still be whining?

Are all the posters there, and the majority on this other thread, REALLY all wrong, and you are right??

Do you actually have an iPad 1? If not, does YOUR opinion matter here? That's what this thread is about after all.

Take off the rosy red tinted Apple specs and you will see there are thousands of disappointed Apple customers here.

Not Android lovers, not the enemy, but people who feel let down over this and thought better of Apple.

You are not helping. You admit yourself that iOS 6 could be made for iPad 1. That is the whole, and only point here.

A tablet is totally different to a mobile phone. Most smart phones are under an expensive monthly contract, where the user pays for the handset, at least partly within the monthly fee. So that is a silly comparison to make. In my view, a tablet is more akin to a laptop. I still get Windows updates for my 4 year old one and I'm not forced to buy all software through one portal. Are you getting any of this?

Sep 21, 2012 8:10 PM in response to Neil37

Sorry I just read you do have an original iPad. So forget that bit. All our opinions count. But if you really do think so much of Apple then surely you should be concerned that thousands of its original ipad customers like me, will be lost. Whether we are 'stupid' or not, we are still Apple customers. And not lost to some other Android tablet - but more than likely no tablet at all. My iPad was a luxury purchase. It's far from essential therefore will not be replaced. I seriously have cancelled my planned purchase of a £1,700 iMac over this and will stick with a new windows desktop again. Like many people, I can only afford to replace devices like pc's every 3 or 4 years.

Sep 21, 2012 8:13 PM in response to Neil37

I own an iPad 1 and use it EVERY DAY.

I swear would everyone be so annoyed if the 3GS DIDN'T get iOS 6?

A tablet is no different than anything. It's running a larger version of the same OS on an iPod touch as well as on an iPhone. Therefore it IS THE SAME.

Technically it is a larger iPod touch. So while other tablet companies may create more laptop devices, that's not what we have here.

Apple discontinued the iPad 1. Even after it still supports it, developers, MANY of them, still support OS 4.3. But apple is not going to sit around and keep their feet dragging for old technology. 2.5 years is an eternity here and it's clear tons of people don't, and won't, get that.

As I've said, throw away your support of Apple and go to android. In a year, come back to me. Then in another year. Show me 2 solid OS upgrades and I will eat my hat. Just because In your mind the iPad doesn't fit the distinction Apple clearly placed it in doesn't make your belief true.

The support for the iPad 1 is dead.

If you think it's so unusable I will HAPPILY take it off of your hands. The bloody thing STILL WORKS. And apple supported it longer than any device outside of a phone; one that is still actively sold as new.

An iPad is NOT a laptop. It is not. It is not. It is not. It is running an OS designed for iPods and iPhones, scaled up for a larger screen. You are thinking wrong.

Sep 21, 2012 8:40 PM in response to andsoitgoes

I'm not thinking wrong. A tablet is a product, a £500/$800 product. How often do you usually replace a product of this cost. Like a fridge, a TV or whatever. Every 2 years? No, I don't think so. I honestly wouldn't have bought an iPad if I thought it would be redundant in 2 years. (a bit less in my case).

You are obviously someone who updates to the latest model all the time. That's fine but you must realise not everyone is like you. Others make a one-off purchase. Doesn't make them wrong, or their opinion less worthy than yours. They are allowed to be disappointed surely, as their device gets overlooked.

Listen, I'm someone who has owned many tech items which have been superceded over the years - laserdisc players, CDi, 3DO, PS 1, 2, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, Super Nintendo, N64, Wii etc etc. I know how things work. But this seems rather different to me as existing software purchased possibly will eventually not work, rendering those purchases useless. This seems a disturbing development. However at least I have a 4S for many of my apps but others may not be so lucky.

ps - on a side note : having played around with iOS 6 for a few days on a 4S & a 4, the 2 new features that I found the most fun, 3D maps & panoramic pics - are not on the iPhone 4. That seems a shame but as it's probably due to tech limitations then that's understandable. And you are right about one thing, if the 3GS hadn't got the upgrade then I would have accepted it without question. But I still wouldn't have been buying a new iPad.

Sep 22, 2012 12:25 AM in response to Neil37

The fact that you agreed that if the 3GS hadn't gotten the upgrade you wouldn't be upset tells me that your feelings are emotional, rather than logical. In no other world would Apple have upgraded a handset that was 3 years old, but here Apple is doing something that not a SINGLE other handset manufacturer provides, a 3 year old device that has a current OS on it.

You yell that Apple is dissing old technology, but they are still supporting a 3GS, a device that at ITS onset cost as much if not more than the iPad. And for some reason Apple did not retire the 3GS like they did the 3G before it. Because it's still active, their team decided that they would keep the OS current, for whatever reason.

Now while I DO agree that it would be nice if this were to translate down to the iPad, it does not. No one here knows exactly why that is. Does it come down to the Siri argument? Technically my iPad 2 can run Siri perfectly, it's got a servicable processor to handle it, but it simply doesn't run it. Is that the same as HD video recording that was enabled on one of the older phones via a jailbreak tweak? I could run Siri on my 4, also with a jailbreak tweak. (To note, though, both of those things ran terribly, Siri was a disaster on my 4, and running it on the iPhone 5, it's like I was using some chinese made Siri knock-off before).

One thing that is not factored in, that you aren't considering, and no one else here is considering, is that while TECHNICALLY the hardware on the 3GS is slightly lesser than the iPad, one of the MOST important factors is screen resolution.

Think about it.

3GS - 320x480

iPad 1 - 1024x768

That's a WHOLE lot more screen to push, that simple fact could have turned their tests on the iPad 1 into "No, we can't efficiently run the OS on this system"

Or, maybe not. Maybe Apple, as they have done with their $400+ iPods or their $700+ phones decided they were done. The 3G doesn't have iOS 6, the iPad 1 doesn't have iOS 6.

This isn't a car. It's not a video game console. It's not a fridge, a laptop, a desktop, a bed, a condom, a stereo system, a fart...

It's a mobile device, Apple has called it that right from the get go. IT is more akin to an iPod Touch than an iPhone. It is not designed to be a persistent piece of technology. These aren't PCs that you can upgrade and shoehorn newer systems on. Apple give you 2, maybe 3 years on a device and that's it. But it's not just Apple that's doing this, either.

EVERY TECH COMPANY DOES THIS. Not just Apple. There's a reason you will never find ANY tablet over 2 years old supporting the most recent OS, because they don't. Am I HAPPY that I'm being left behind? NO, I'd be stupid if I was thrilled about it, but I knew from the get go that I might only get 1 OS upgrade, and instead I got 2 fully functioning upgrades. With the number of complaints people lobbed at the iPad 1 after upgrading to iOS 5, no wonder Apple wouldn't want to go further, either.

I heard complaint after complaint that iOS 5 made their iPad 1 run like a dog. Do you NOT think that iOS 6 would make that situation worse? After the whole headache with the iPhone 3G and iOS 4, I highly doubt Apple wanted to travel down a path that would just make more people angry.

But I'll leave you with one last thing, because it's clear I could have God himself come down and explain this to you and you'd still not learn to accept that everyone is doing this, Apple included:

In no world does technlogy advance by staying in the past. If Apple devoted resources to supporting their older hardware, YOU my friend might not even have an iPad in the first place.

Oh - OH. I do have a comparison for you, that is perfect I believe.

PC Gamers. Try being a PC gamer on the same hardware for more than a year. Go ahead, try it. My computer that I bought earlier this year that was a pretty significant system IS CRAP for gaming. And if I got it up to snuff with a great video card, it would be CRAP in less than a year. Which is why I'm not a PC gamer.

You're clearly a console gaming person, and because of that you're spoiled. Console tech has stayed stationary for what, 6 years now? 7? Personally, I'm thrilled. The 360 I purchased in 2007 is still the most current gaming system out there. I honestly don't know how we've gotten so lucky to be able to play games and enjoy all that we do, but I'm not going to complain. It's like consoles are this weird microcosm all by their lonesome, out there while there are iPad 3s that have screen resolutions that exceed HDTVs... but yet they sit, untouched. The companies slim the hardware, refine, but everything else just stays the same.

Go ahead, find an android tablet with near the support Apple has provided. Go find an Android phone that still gets not just extended OS updates from the manufacturer, but TIMELY updates (most Android phones have to wait for the provider to take their firmware and fiddle with it). I purchased a high end Windows Mobile phone before I got my iPhone and can you guess how many updates were pushed out to my phone? ZERO. I've had constant, timely and immediate updates to my iPad 1, iPhone 4, my other iPhone 4, and my iPad 2. And come late next year, when the 4th generation iPad is out, I can foresee the support for my iPad 2 stopping. It's inevitable and nothing any of us can do will change that. Personally, I don't plan on throwing out my iPad 2. It works just fine. As does my 1. Again, both used every day. And if you told my wife, who is the primary user of the iPad 1, that it wasn't getting iOS 6, you know what she'd say? "And..? Does that mean it's going to stop working?"... no, simply no.

And I still believe developers will continue to provide deep support for iOS 5 and below. iOS 5 will be the baseline for most companies for years to come. I still see the majority of apps supporting not only iOS 5, but iOS 4. I saw many mentions of IM apps that run web apps in the background - one of the most popular, IM+... iOS 4 is the requirement.

one term I'd like to use to address all this "OMG OMG NO IOS 6!!" is:

F

U

D

Stop casting it, it's fine. The iPad will still work, and if you don't want Apple any longer and move to Android... well, good luck.

I think dropping iPad support while still supporting older 3GS was a mistake.

The business Apple is in is all about people's emotions and experience. No one bought iPad because they need it, just because they wanted it, and then they were happy with it. Now people are angry, because they feel they're forced to spend more money on a new device, though they already payed much. Not providing new iOS for iPad while providing it for an older device can only be justified by costs, and people hate when someone decided they not worth spending little extra. It's all about emotions. Apple has had a good track record of providing long term support for their hardware, so people had expectations, which justified their purchase: "come on, though it's $800, it's Apple, and this device will last me many years, like my iMac did". Now they fell like their expectation are betrayed. Again, it's all about emotions, that won't convert into new purchases.

Few more notes:

1) Greater screen resolution compared to 3GS as a reason for not providing upgrade is BS, pixels didn't get any "fatter" in iOS 6, nor there are any extra visual effects compared to iOS 5.

2) 2007-year iMacs still get upgrade for Mountain Lion, 2008-old macbooks, 2009 3GS still get an upgrade. Looks like iPad 1 has the shortest support cycle among Apple devices (maybe excluding iPod touches?)

3) In Android world, you can always install CyanoGen mod to get the latest OS on your device (all major devices are supported: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices ), so if you don't get support from the manufacturer, you get one from community. Here you're bound to Apple's upgrades (or not upgrades). Not saying that Android devices are much cheaper.

4) In Windows world, YOU decide whether you want to upgrade or not. How many years Windows XP was supported? 10+ years? In any case, you are always free to install Linux.

Anyway, it's all about emotion (all these useless handheld Apple products are), and about breaking expectations.

Holy crap you people. It's like a religious argument. No one gets it!

I give up. I have never met a more stubborn group of people in my life. Get over it. Get rid of your Apple products and go PC/Android, then see how you like it.

As for the argument of installing mods to do this and that, you not only missed the point but you went completely around the world and ended up in freaking Jupiter. OFFICIAL support. I can install Linux on the iPad, but that is besides the point.

I'm done here. No offense, but you all just make my brain hurt in your logic. I generally respect opinions, but these things you aren't saying aren't opinions, they're just incorrect pathways some messed up part of your brain is somehow taking.

Go on, argue all you want. 10000 more pages. Nothing. Will. Change.

Want a device that doesn't go out of date, buy a toaster.

I got the iPad 1 when it first came out and I really enjoy the device. I was very disappointed when I found out I couldn't upgrade it with the new iOS 6. I believe we (iPad 1owner) should be allowed to that upgrad as I don't believe the iPad 1 is an old device and the new features would just make it better.

The worse part , as mentioned all above, is that the iPhone 3GS still can get the upgrade, I wouldn't have been so disappointed if 3GS wasnt in the list.

Apple just being greedy, and forcing us to change our device. As after sometime we might not even been able to use some apps as they ain't compatible...

Apple...think again

ios 6 not compatible for ipad 1?, ios 6 not compatible for ipad 1?
