Updates are run from an administrator account while logged in. It's only something like a full system installation (which is an upgrade, not an update) which involves booting from a different volume. What are you installing?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
I was trying to update iTunes (along with other updates) and the instilation was going fine. However like I mentioned once I click restart the Mac goes directly to the different account sign in page without restarting, and well the updates aren't installed.
I tried this and am still having the same problem.
To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account. Set it to automatically login to that account.
Does login work in the new account?
Nope, this didn't work either. Same problem.
Hi all!!
I had this problem too, and after a few days of search, I could not find any help about the problem. Also, I followed this post, but needed to solve the problem as soon as I could.
So here is how I solved it.
When I trying to install the updates, as usual, I clicked the "Install X items" button. (Where X is the number of updates to apply). Then the Mac just going to the login screen and did not apply the updates.
Then, I thought to select only normal applications, like iPhoto, iTunes, etc.. to update, and all of them were installed successfully. Then I left only the important updates that required rebooting and I choose to install one by one untill all the updates were applied.
Now the system is up to date and I have no problems.
Hope this works for you too!
Regards!
ch_hto,
This solved my problem. Thanks.
Thanks so much - I was starting from scratch from the install disc after a corrupted hard drive and it kept hanging up here. Your solution worked!
