I dragged iMovie11 app into trash can. Restored iMovie09 app from Time machine. Temporary work around until Apple sort this issue out. Hopefully they are working on this...
I went into the Quicktime Library and only find these two components: AC3Movieimport.component and Perian.component - there is nothing else in there.
I then used the finder to search for AppleintermediateCodec.component and AppleMPEG2Codec.component but neither seem to be on my machine. Quicktime does work fine though.
So, iMovie is still down, but I'm not in such a bind as to revert to an older version - yet...

Great stuff - trashing the various bits you suggested has allowed iMovie to launch and not crash. Thanks..
Did you have Flip4Mac icon in your Finder QT Folder?
Peter
glad it worked for you. i dont think i had those in my folder... i had about 4 other things in there I had to trash. Unfortunately i still seem to have lost my projects...waiting to talk to apple care again to see if there is a way to put them back in iMovie.
Same issue here have you been able to resolve this yet?
I trashed the 3rd party documents in the Finder:Quicktime Folder leaving AppleintermediateCodec.component and AppleMPEG2Codec.component.
iMovie now launches and does not crash. I have Flip4Mac and reinstalled this (the version I had was old). The install added docs to the QT Folder, happily iMovie still loads fine after installing these Flip4Mac bits!

I had the same issue since I updated yesterday.
I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.
ONLY delete this file and it seems to work fine now.
I've deleted all the non-mac componants. Repaired permissions. Etc. Nothing is working.
Anyone else have some ideas?
Hopefully I backed up with Time Machine! Will try that next.
Restoring iMovie to an earlier version with Time Machine will definately get you back up and running again. I did that two days ago after I did the upgrade and could not keep the updated iMovie from crashing. See my earlier notes.
I do not know what Apple is doing about this problem. But I think we can all agree that there is something wrong with the update. I don't think it is a good or normal practice to have to go into your inner folders and trash files just to get an updated application to work. I expect more from Apple and will be watching for some kind of an offical fix.
iPhoto and iMovie applications updated at the same time. Have you already opened iPhoto and let it update all of your photos to the new format??
If iPhoto has not performed this task, then it causes issues with iMovie opening.
I did this prior to deleting the file
Mac HD/Library/Quicktime/3ivxVideoCodec.component
My iMovie is working fine now.
Yes, I updated both Aperature and iPhoto.
No go.
And I don't have the 3ivx codec in my Quicktime folder.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Hopefully we see an update soon.

This has worked for me, thanks.
2.4 Ghz intel core 2 Duo
3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

This worked - moved the files to trash and iMovie now opens and runs.
Do I need these deleted codecs for DivX and Flip4Mac?
Nope. Flip4mac is in my folder, after upgrade, which it prompted me for. Don't have the other one so can't answer that for you. Best.
Try deleting the 3ivxVideoCodec file from your /library/quicktime file on your hard disk. That worked for me
