Thank you! This worked for me. It should not be this hard. Apple used to just work. Now, I do not know what is happening to them...
This worked for me. Thanks!
Thank you hsmd! Your answer including the simplest way to find the folder was very helpful. It is very disappointing that a month after this "update" created this issue apple hasn't issued a patch themselves. When my wife saw my frustration an hour ago she said "well this is how it will be now that Jobs is gone". Hopefully she will be wrong.
Thank you very much! I 've seen in some posts, that I should delete that 3ivxVideoCodec file, but I didn't know how to access that file. Now, iMovie works again on my MacBook and iMac. Your post was a very great help! Greetings from Germany 🙂
Thanks again to all of you for your help. I wrote the solution for German speaking users in my blog: http://ingeseibel.de/?p=2105
Hi all, this solution was great and worked like a treat. Does anyone know if that pesky codec file will be needed if I want to do screen captures using Quicktime to then use in iMovie?
Or should I go right ahead and delete it from my Trash now?
Thanks a bunch.
Merci! Many thanks!
What if I do not have a file named: com.apple.iMoveApp.plist ???
I looked everywhere, even did a finder search, I dont have it...
Help?
I've just noticed a minor error in my description in my earlier post (see page 1). I left the second "i" out of iMovie in the file name. Perhaps this caused your search to fail. If so, please accept my apology.
To locate the file, please follow the instructions I posted earlier. The file is in your User Library folder - not the Library folder at the top level. Here's the full text again (with the minor correction to iMovieApp):
The preference file is located in your User (Home) folder Library/Preferences. It is named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist". In Lion, to access your User/Library folder, hold down the Option key and click on Go in the Finder menu. The Library folder will appear in the drop down list. Lion has hidden the Home Library folder, but in earlier versions of Mac OS X it was available like all other folders.
If you are running an earlier version of iMovie, the preference file has a slightly different name. Instead of iMovieApp it will contain a number in the name, such as "com.apple.iMovie8.plist" - this is the name of the preference file for iMovie '09.
Also, please note that Apple have released an update to iMovie '11, with the latest version now being 9.0.7 - among other things, this update "Fixes an issue related to third-party QuickTime components that could cause iMovie to quit unexpectedly"
Here's the link to the update, and the description published by Apple:

Caretakerless' solution seems to be working for others too. There's instructions for how to do it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4319
A frustrating hour of having Imovie crash after crash, but digging around in the Community came across this thread, tried deleting the offending 3ivxvideocodec file, and it worked a treat. THANK YOU to everyone who through a long process of elimination found this fix and took the trouble to post it. Legends, all of you.
This worked for me -- thanks!
Robert,
I did not have the 3ivx component in my Quicktime folder either. Upgraded to iMovie 9.0.7 (iMovie '11). Crash on startup continued.
Removing all componenets except AppleIntermediateCodec and AppleMPEG2Codec components allowed iMovie to start up and run fine.
Gradually adding components and attempting to start iMovie also isolated the QuickTimeComponents.component as a culprit. This component is from 2007 and is version 7.6.2
This is not mentioned in the iMovie 9.0.6 and 9.0.7: iMovie unexpectedly quits after opening help article.
Old and third party components have historically caused problems like this in my experience. A careful testing by removing and gradually adding things back is usually the way to find the solution.
Hope this helps.
I noticed that imovie11 was crashing. tried deleting pref files etc and re-installed imovie 11 app. All to no avail it would launch then after a few secs crashed.
FIx was to run iphoto and let it load new thumbnails also as a belt and bracs since I could not find the 3ivx codec in the Quicktime folder I run the uninstall 3ivx app for good measure. iMovie 11 OK now.
Simon
Yes, this worked. Deleting the 3ivxvideocodec file did the trick! Thank you thank you for saving me valuable time with this simple fix!
