Q: My MacBook screen went black and now the screen won't turn on

I hear the initial "turning on" sound, buy after that there is nothing.

What is wrong and how can I fix it?

    can you hear the hard disk running? shine a torch (flashlight) onto the screen. can you see an image?

    Yes I heAr the dsk running. But I do nOt see any images because as I mentioned before, I only hear the initial start up sound, the one that the disk(?) itself makes not that other sound. My computer is not on mute.

    which macbook is it you have? can you remove the battery?

    I can't remember the exact model but it runs osx 10.4 or 10.5 I believe. I probably couldnt remove the battery because 1.I don't even know where it is or what it looks like and 2.I have no experience with anything like that so I'd probably end up breaking it.

    you only need a coin to flip it out.

     

    Try this

     

    Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

    Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove

    Note: Learn about removing the battery on MacBook and MacBook Pro.

    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    3. Remove the battery.
    4. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    5. Release the power button.
    6. Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
    7. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

    I can't even get the back panel open because I don't have A screwdriver small enough to unscrew the screws holding thebottom panel in place.

    The bottom is one piece? metal? with 10 screws holding it in place?

    This has just happened to my computer, one minute i was using it, one minute the screen went black. I thought i just needed to reboot it so i held down the power button to shut it down and then restarted it. I heard the same start up sound however i saw nothing on the screen. But after looking a bit closer i realised that the stuff on the screen WAS there but so so so faint. I also found that when i pushed f1 (lower brightness) all the way down and then back up again with f2 my screen would come up as normal for a split second. When i kept doing this (back and forth on the brightness) it eventually stayed bright in short time periods so i eventually could navigate my way to the system preferences and this is what I changed:

     

    > Apple button (top left corner)

    > System preferences

    > Hardware > Energy Saver

    > Untick everything under the "Power Adapter tab"

    > Put the Computer sleep and Display sleep to "Never" by moving the time slider to the right

    > Do the same thing for the "Battery" tab

     

    This has worked for me so far so I just wanted to let other people know that are having the same problem. Before I did this i was contemplating taking it to the Apple store like everyone else and paying 200 quid to get it fixed. Glad I played around with it first though and I hope this means other people will be able to fix their ones too!

    Ok same problem but I know abit more.

     

    The screen is black but computer starts up normal

     

    Its a macbook air and i cant get the battery out

     

    Holding shift key at restart as the tone sounds does nothing

     

    Also there is nothing when shining the light into the screen

     

    FYI... This computer was refurbished from a friend and could have everything to do with but never mind that any help would be great

    I had the exact same problem with my macbook and I thought it was either the inverter cable or the logic board battery.

    I tried resetting the SMC, tried what Macky2392 suggests, unfortunately nothing worked for me.

    So, I took it to the apple store, where they kept it for 2 weeks, then they sent me an email saying it was the inverter cable. The replacement would cost 185 EURO. I told them to go ahead with it and it took them another week to get back to me and they told me then that there was probably something wrong with the display. And that would cost 351 EURO to be fixed.

    I just told them to not do anything and return it back to me. I really don't think it's worth paying so much money for the repair...

    So, my advice is try everything else before taking it to Apple.

    If anyone has any other idea to help, it would be great.

    Hi,

     

    I have followed a lot of different advice over this issue.

     

    I have a late 2007 Black Macbook with a GMA X3100 graphics chip.

     

    I have reset the PRAM and I have reset the SMC. I have done a Disk Utility Verification and repair all to no avail.

     

    I did a final trial reboot and yet again it starts then goes black, I then waited 1 miniyte so it was fully booted although with a black screen, I pressed F1 to remove any brightness and then F2 to raise the brightness again, the screen came back on. I am not sure if this is a longterm fix, I will be going to the local Mac authorised shop on Monday (we have a dedicated mac sales shop in Oulu, not quite sure how franchises work)

     

    I will report back if it stays on or if they can do a better fix.
