What adapter do I need to use my Apple Studio Display M7649 with a MacBook Pro? Is the DVI - ADC Adapter the same for studio display and cinema display that came with the Mac Pro Tower?

Aperture 3, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

The M8661LL/B is what you need. They originally sold for about $100 new, but can go for much more on ebay, etc., since Apple stopped selling them. It is the same for all Apple ADC Displays, as it is primarily a passive device, passing through the USB and DVI signals and providing power for the ADC display. DV Warehouse has them for $188.

I have used the 15" Studio LCD/ADC, the 17" Studio (the one you have) ADC, and a 20" Cinema ADC display all with the same DVI-ADC adapter. As long as the graphics card can support the resolution, it'll work.

Does your MBP have a DVI connection, or is it a later model with a Mini DisplayPort or even Thunderbolt connection? If so, you will also need an Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter for $29.

Unless you have at least the DVI-ADC Adapter already, you should be aware that online auctions have the later aluminum DVI 20" Apple Cinema Display (A1081/M9177LL/A) for not a lot more than the adapters go for. So you might want to check those out, as not only do they "match" the aesthetic of the MBP, they also have a USB 2 hub (vs USB 1 in the older display), and a FireWire 400 hub built in.

I think it's hard to justify using an ADC display on a non-ADC Mac any more, if you don't already have the adapter. Later Apple displays are cheap enough at auction sites that it makes better financial sense to go that way. Not to mention you can get non-Apple displays for a lot less than even a used Aluminum Cinema display.

<<Mods: Would this discussion be a better fit in the "Cinema Displays" category, under (LCD) - Clear Enclosure?? >>
