Another device on the network is using your computers IP Address. If you continue to have problems, change the IP Address of this computer!?

I have just moved house, I use a Mac Pro (10.7.4) and a Mac Book Pro (10.7.4)

On the desktop I use a wireless dongle to connect to BT Broadband Router,

The laptop uses its own wireless to connect to the router.

We also have 2 other PC Laptops that connect wirelessly to the router.

The internet is very temperamental, keeps dropping off and I have to restart the router.

I keep getting a message on my desktop saying -

"Another device on the network is using your computers IP Address.

If you continue to have problems, change the IP Address of this computer or the IP address of the other device"

Is this something that could be causing problems for the router?

ANd how do I go about fixing the issues as I am totally useless once the word network is used!!

Apologies for posting in the wrong place, and any help will be really appreciated!!

Many thanks

Andy

THANK YOU! I was just sure I was hacked. I tried to open a link to "EverNote" sent in a text message from an old colleague. My phone slowed down then froze (I have an iphone5). I tried to turn off the phone, but it wouldn't turn off. I went to my laptop to search for an answer and the window popped right up saying that another device was using my ip address. I ran over and pulled the plug on the router, then removed the batteries from both my iPhone and my MacBook.

I later took them to my office and booted up my MacBook. Everything seemed fine. I proceeded to change all my passwords (still changing some less important ones as I go along). I finally put the battery back in my phone, but took it off wi-fi while I was home. Meanwhile, my husband changed the user id and password on our wi-fi. Everything seems to be working fine.

We had 2 wi-fi addresses from the one router (don't know why), and a few days later, I realized that my computer was defaulting to the 2nd address, when I got the message again about another device on my ip address. I had my phone and computer forget the second one. It's been very stressful. I am so glad to know that it was probably from my recent iPhone update to OS7.
