Caps Dictation Commands Not Working Anymore

I used to be able to say "all caps" and have dictation capitalize the following word or say "caps on" and have dictation capitalize the first letter of each word. Recently it started just typing out all caps or caps on. This leads me to believe it's recognizing my words correctly but not recognizing them as commands. Anyone else having this issue or have thoughts on a solution?

Thanks,

Dave

The plot thickens... Nuance Swype beta.

Turns out that Nuance purchased Swype, and is incorporating its mobile speech technology into this project.

I've installed the beta, and all of the expected / familiar "Nuance" voice commands are present and functional.

Caps On/Off, Open/Close Quote, New Line / Paragraph.

So, there appears to be a few good reasons for Nuance and Apple / Android to not be sharing technologies.

My apologies for the confusion. Yes, I am talking about Swype on Android. To my knowledge, Apple has never allowed an alternative keyboard (Swype, SwiftKey, etc) in the App Store.

I mentioned in a previous post that I decided to try the Nexus 7 (Android Jelly Bean) only to see if I could find a more functional replacement for iOS dictation now that its functionality has been downgraded.

I don't know anything about Windows Mobile, but I'm getting the impression that Nuance isn't about to let anyone else succeed in this space.

Even if Nuance released a Swype-with-voice version for iOS, Apple would never allow users replace the default keyboard and dictation with it, like Android will.

Again, my apologies. If anyone notices a change or increase in iOS dictation functionality -- the raison d'etre for this thread -- please post about it here. Thanks.

Nuance has a 1998 patent (#5799279) titled "Continuous Speech Recognition of Text and Commands" that specifically covers the recognition and translation of spoken commands into "command keystrokes." That portion of the patent has been upheld by a court in at least one case I know of. My guess--and it's just a guess-- is that the suspension of command recognition by Apple is due to a patent dispute with Nuance. Let's hope they come to an agreement soon, as dictation on all of Apple's devices is now marginally useful, at best.

(It sure would be nice, Apple, if you'd speak up on this matter.)

I also recently noticed that the Caps command wasn't working anymore. Then yesterday my dictation stopped working completely — the three little dots would just bounce a couple times and then stop.

After reading this entire thread, I first rebooted my phone (by holding down both buttons past the red slider and until the phone started rebooting), then I turned Siri off and on again.

Not only did my dictation start working again, but all the commands are working also. As a matter of fact, I dictated this entire post into my phone. I only had to make one correction involving a homonym. Whoops, make that two corrections."Homonym" came out "harmonium".

How could Nuance patent the inclusion of commands in speech?! Bosses have been doing that for years in dictation to their secretaries; there's absolutely nothing new about saying "open paren" or "new line", etc. Granted maybe they can patent algorithms to judge when someone is issuing a command versus saying a word they want dicated, but that should *not* bar others from being able to use voice commands under other, separate algorithms!
