Macbook Pro Retina battery problem?

I took my Macbook Retina out of the box and immediately charged it to 100% and it has only given me 2:32 minutes on battery life. Should I wait to do a full cycle of a battery charge on it, or is something wrong? Isn't it supposed to last 7 hours?

this realy helps me as i am useing a HP laptop and i am tring to find out why at times windows says in the window where it tells your battery %, "236%" as i was tring to find an answer to this problem. but a quick solve to that would restart as one soultion and the 2nd is to charge it for 30min then discharge useing as much of the battery you can in 10-15min to prevent from shuting off also keep the charger at hand (literaly) then shutdown and set on the charger for as long as reccomended for the battery as if it fresh out of the box/bag. though with li-ion those are the steps to solve it as i am not sure for lo-po as the same can be done. i was pritymuch winging it as it dose work but on li-ion with HWMonitior (HardWare Monitor) i was using the mAh value as my marker for the estamite. but again thank you for that li-ion battery part on the post.

I suffered from poor battery live and the follwing solved my problem: Install OS X Mavericks.

In Mavericks you can use Activity Monitor to check the energy consumption on a per app basis! You see the peak an average energy consumption of each app.

Now, afer one year, I have spotted that there was a background process consuming unjustified amount of energy.

PS: In my case, it was the driver of the Smart board software "SmartResponse"

I have been having battery issues with the latest rMBP 13 inch (late 2013). But I thinked I solved the problem.

If you have tried this already:

and still have issues, then do this:

Simply go and create a new user account as Administrator. This solved my issue and it now reads many more hours on my battery monitor.

Hope this helps.
