My 8gb 4th gen iPod Touch only comes up on iTunes as having 6.43gb, does anybody have any remedies for this problem?

My iPod is defintely 8gb and when I connect to the computer iTunes says that it's storage capacity is 6.43gb. Please tell me how this can be fixed.

iPod touch (4th generation), iOS 5.1.1, 8gb, White

That's the correct value. The IOS (operating system) takes up a portion of the storage.

Thanks, but I've worked in IT long enough to know the difference between base 2 GBytes and base 10.

My point was simply that the impact of any device using 25%+ of its available storage is exacerbated when you only have 8GB to start with, on a device specifically designed for media storage.

Presuming the firmware is held in EEPROM or similar rewritable storage, I genuinly dont understand how apple can lose up to 2.5GB of storage on an 8gb Ipod.

Listen kid your obviously not very bright so I'm going to put this simpe as possible

iPods,IPads,IPhones all need space off built in apps and the operating system. It can be a real pain but so is this **** scab on my arm. Listen kid, life's hard and so is your mom up the bum but we move foreward.now stop obsessing over this and accept the inevitable.

Have a happy life,

i know what you mean i have the same problem with my 8gb ipod. i purchased it a couple years ago and always rejected the software upgrades until recently, i stupidly accepted the ugrade and it took a chunk of the gbs. since the upgrade i had to remove many songs and videos to make room for newer purchases cause the required apps (youtube, weather, stock, app store) are taking up space i could use for more music and videos.
