SSD upgrade on new macbook pro?

I'm going to get the "classic" 2.9ghz 13" macbook pro soon, and the only thing i'm disappointed in is that apple still went with hard drives. That being said, i think i want to upgrade the hard drive to an ssd. I would just order the upgrade from apple but the 256gb is a little pricey for me, so i have a few questions:

- will installing an ssd myself void my warranty?

- i've never done any internal work on a computer, but i have no doubt i could do this myself. Even so, could an apple genius do it for me that way if something goes wrong its his fault? 🙂

- whats the best affordable ssd to get. I was looking at crucial because it was affordable but they look kind of cheap compared to the designs of samsung's and vertex 4.

- Lastly, if im doing this upgrade right when i get my macbook i would just need to install the os onto the drive instead of using a cloning program correct? Since Lion is "download only" with no disk what would i need to do that?

- on a side note, i was considering putting the ssd in the optical drives compartment but i decided against it because i have no problem with using external storage if i need to. I feel like putting the ssd in the main slot is a safer bet

Bimmer 7 ,, I need your help I have been reading your posts regarding 2 upgrads I made. You seem to know all about them .

1st I upgraded the Ram on my late 2008 Macbook Pro from 4 to 8 .. but I installed 1333 instead ! It seems to be working and shows 1333 ..

2nd upgrade was the Crucial M4 Hard Drive ... Its slow when installing anything on it .. but its lightspeed when i use it .. is that normal ?

the real problem I'm facing is ... small freezes the come during surfing or after running an application for 15 seconds ... I never had them before the 2 upgrades. I'm trying to solve this problem for 2 months now...

Please help !

here's your issue - first the RAM - i went through this with my late 08 Macbook Uni.....specs were for 1066MHz and i installed 1333MHz Kingston.....a few months go by without issues....One day, can't use it....Tried everything....I gave up and decided that i was going to take it to Apple, but before I did that, I installed the original 1066MHz RAM - BAM! Macbook working all of the sudden....

So, returned the 1333MHz Kingston RAM for 1333MHz Crucial RAM and everything is going well....This is the problem you will face when you install RAM that is over the 1066MHz spec that Apple suggest.

Now, for your Crucial M4 issues.....First suggestion is try repairing your disk permissions - if that doesn't solve it, click on your apple logo, about this mac, more info, system report, serial ata and see what firmware you have in your Crucial M4. If your firmware is 0000F, downgrade to firmware 0309 by calling Crucial Tech Support and they will give you the link for that firmware...

Good luck and let me know if you need more help....

He'll be around in a minute... we were just chatting so I know that he's up.

You really should be using 1066 MHz RAM instead of 1333MHz - that's what your machine was designed to use and I've seen more problems with the 1066 MHz machines running faster RAM than 1333MHz running 1600MHz.

Bimmer and I both have Crucial m4s. The only problem I had was when I updated my firmware to 000f instead of staying on 0309. However, I frequent the Crucial forums and notice that as the newer drives are shipping with 000f, no Mac users are complaining about them.

That's my 2¢ - Bimmer can step in and answer in more detail - just got a message from him - let me point hi in your direction.

Disk says is ok .. I tried formating to see if it helps nothing helped .. I did the downgrade which at first seemed to help then I still get small freezes .. I upgraded again ..( because my hard drive came with 000F )

Question .. If I used one 2 gb ( original ram 1067 and the 2nd chip 1333 ) could that help ? returning the ram is an issue for me I got it from another country ( plus i'm not sure if its the issue ! ) ram was working fine before the hard drive upgrade .. but now i'm second guessing the problem.

I really don't want to give you a yes or no answer on that one....But it might solve your issue if you try....All it will do is downclock your 1333MHz to 1066MHz which is what you need in the first place....Put it on and if that works for you, then leave it as it is or you can return your 1333MHz and swap it for a 1066MHz....

Let me know how that works for you...

I'm seeing the RAM as at least a potential factor in your problems if not the cause. And, no, I defintely wouldn't mix speeds (it's OK, sometimes, to mix sizes, but you're asking for trouble mixing speeds). If you can't return the RAM, see if you have a friend with the 2011 model who can use it and buy the 1067MHz sticks for yourself... would that work?

Seeing a lote more replies - let me shut my pie hole for a moment and see what others are saying...
