Boot Camp won't start in Windows 8

There is another solution that Shampu mentioned. It takes a bit of technical know-how. This solution doesn't require switching your account status and permanently fixes the problem.

1. 1. Download and Install the windows 8 SDK - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/hh852363.aspx
2. 2. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\bin\x64 (or x86 at the end if you're on a 32 bit version)
3. 3. Copy C:\Windows\System32\AppleControlPanel.exe to this folder
4. 4. Open Command Prompt and use mt.exe to extract the manifest to this folder using the following command:

mt.exe -inputresource:AppleControlPanel.exe -out:extracted.manifest

1. 5. Edit this file in notepad. On the 6th line replace level="highestAvailable" with level="asInvoker". Be careful not to change anything else here.
2. 6. Place the modified manifest back into control panel using mt with the following command:

mt.exe -outputresource:AppleControlPanel.exe -manifest extracted.manifest

7. Copy and Replace AppleControlPanel.exe back to C:\Windows\System32\AppleControlPanel.exe

This will fix your boot camp control panel problem. (If it doesn't you've set Bootcamp.exe to run as administrator, and you need to lower its permissions back to normal. I had to change the aforementioned setting, use task manager to end Bootcamp.exe, and then restart it before it worked. (This program is found in C:\Program Files\Boot Camp))

I'm wondering if this boot camp startup control panel problem is related to the sequence of setting up the AHCI drivers in relation to the boot camp drivers.

Specifically, I installed Windows, then boot camp drivers then later configured the system to use the AHCI drivers and had this problem with the boot camp start up disk control panel.

I'm wondering if the sequence was reversed, that is, install Windows, configure and install the AHCI drivers and THEN, install boot camp drivers in Windows, will this problem still plague the system?

You need to reduce the UAC settings-

Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click on the User Accounts icon.

Click on the Change User Account Control settings link. (see screenshot below)

Move the slider up or down to the setting for how you want to be notified by UAC, and click on OK. (see screenshots below)

How UAC works in Windows 8 is, all apps run as a standard user with standard privileges. When an app needs elevated permissions, it triggers that dialog which dims our desktop. However, some apps like BootCamp Control Panel just aren't designed to work with UAC, and end up saying you don't have privileges. When you put the UAC settings to the lowest, all apps still work as a standard user with standard privileges, but Windows silently grants Admin privileges to apps that ask for it.

Another way:

1. Create the standard user

2. Go to c:\windows\system32 and find the AppleControlPanel.exe

3. Hold down "Shift" and Right-Click the AppleControlPanel.exe

4. From the context menu choose "Run as different user."

5. Type in your new standard user and password and it invokes the RunAs command as that user which we all know works.

6. Disable the standard user if you do not get into the program often. Doing it this way also prevents extra profiles from being created.

I have this issue on Windows 7 64Bit on a Macbook Pro Mid 2012 13inc. I can't install the newest version of Bootcamp 5.1 as it says its not for my model.+

Are you referring to BC Assistant or BC drivers?

On a 13" mid-2012 MBP, my BCA is v 5.1.3 (build 498) on Yosemite 10.10.2. The correct BC drivers (not the same as BCA version) can be found at Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows operating systems - Apple Support.
