MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Do you have any evidence that proves that Samsung screens are prefect? I have read accounts that suggest, not all Samsung screens are okay.

No one has claimed IR on Samsung yet. Neither their own, nor in store. Other Samsung defects are irrelevant to this particular discussion.

I also wonder the fact that there at probably easily less than 1000 ppl on here with problem. Now I am sure by now apple has sold 400,000+ sold thus far.

I'd like to see a source on that 400k as Apple is pretty secretive on sales numbers outside of official announcements.

Regardless, as you said, not everyone knows Apple Discussions. For majority of consumers, if they notice a problem, they go to Apple Store, their retailer, call Apple, etc. etc. 1000 people reporting in here is actually quite a significant number.

There's also the fact that many are just noticing retention, weeks after initial purchase. As evidenced on this thread.

Lastly, I've seen (and see) people live with much worse and call it normal. When the 3G problems with random shutdown were all the rage, I had friends who insisted this is normal operation. Even though it started all of a sudden right after an iOS update. The troubles I've seen people put up with and not care about makes me think most will "enjoy" retention as a "cool effect my laptop pulls" even if they notice it. I'm guessing that's really what Apple (and many other manufactureres) rely on.

You folks should see what Lenovo's offical tech note says about their IPS displays and image retention...

It's embarrassing, but then again, Apple pulled a Lenovo on us just last week:

That's what I call 'rooting for consumer's idiocy'. And there will always be another idiot with $ out there to buy an expensive car, an expensive Apple computer, etc. without any finesse to to know what they should expect out of it.

Let's face it: Apple devices do not cater to the whims and needs of thralls of electrical and software engineers. They're excellent machines, but sell to a wide crowd of 'oooh, shiny!' consumers.

Normally I'd agree with you, but not with these particular Macbook Pros.

If Joe-consumer buys a rMBP instead of a MBA, he's got rocks in his head. Some will, sure, but most won't.

The average consumer may be willing to drop down a several hundred dollars for an iPad or a subsidized iPhone, but the vast majority of them would not spend $2K+ on a laptop unless they really needed it. I, and most of the people on this thread, are professionals who really do need the rMBP for work. The fact that the screen, which is supposedly it's greatest feature, is the part I'm most disappointed with is sad.

I have two rMBPs at the moment, both LG and Samsung displays on the base model. I plan to do some tests in a few days. I just found out that the Samsung unit is around 4 grams heavier! My LG machine has gone through two screen replacements and has seen more use, but I doubt it could cut the weight worth a small coin. There can be other components that vary in weight ofcourse, but for those who can choose the unit they buy, have an accurate weighting machine at hand and choose the heaviest of the lot... I'd like to hear if this works. Good luck!

LOL! That's awesome! Ingenious! However, with all of the packaging tolerances (they're not going to let you take it out of the box to weigh it) it likely won't work. Try it though. It would be cool if it did. Are you going to take some clear photos of the 2 screens at maximum brightness and the same image? It would be interesting. Also, do you have the IR issue on the LG?

Yes, IR on the LG is quite bad already after two weeks. I'll take some pics, maybe video.

You can weight the whole package ofcourse, but yeah it can be tricky...

If it was only the laptops you were weighing, it just might work. It's just that the tolerances for each piece of packaging, the cable lengths (which add weight), etc...all add up.

I still think it was an awesome idea!

So here are pics of the IR after leaving on for 1 min -- the earliest amount of time before the screensaver or energy saver can kick in. I can actually read my email, it is now a security concern for me. IR was not apparent on my LG retina when I first received it and it seems to be getting worse now at 7 weeks in. Taking into Apple Store tomorrow to see what they say since Applecare and Senior Reps have told me: they will not replace, to wait for firmware, to send in for repair and hope for a Samsung, and to take into store. Real uniform answers across the board lol, basically a different answer for every different rep I spoke to.

Wow, that is teriible joekljk! Worst I've seen so far. How long did you have the MBP before IR started to be visible? I sent my LG screen back after just 11 days after I started to see faint IR after 5 minutes. But 1 minute - that is shocking. How can Apple expect people to accept this as "normal" - it's BS!

Good luck at the store tomorrow. Which country are you in?

What really bothers me is the way I was handled by Applecare and by the Senior Advisors. One SA rep told me that he would not replace since my 7 week old was past 14 days. He also said it would be fixed by firmware and was not a hardware issue. He said I was lucky I had Apple Care because he would not even get it repaired for me right now. I asked how it not a hardware issue when I see burned in images off of a cold boot. He told me to wait for the fix. I hung up frustrated ready to fix him.

Customer Service rep was ready to get me a replacement after I explained my situation to a Tech Support Rep. Then after a long wait the Customer Service rep said in a nice way there was a change of plans and I was transfered to another SA who told me IR was normal. I explained how is it normal for an image to be on the screen for a min then stay on there for a min and a half. He was shocked -- put me on hold -- said that was extremely fast. I also explained that my buddies retina had a Samsung display and exhibited none of these problems. I explained that I felt I had been sold an inferior product. He said I should take it in to the store and see what they can do but there was nothing he could do for me. Turned down again.

No way I am getting a 16GB Retina replacement so I have no downtime for school or my business. I have to buy another one during that time period or pay $1300 to exchange for the maxed out version which they have in store that has 16GB.

So this is how you treat a loyal customer who has bought their third laptop from you ntm turned on many many others to Apple products.

God forbid they actually do the right thing and replace however many times it takes until it is right.

Not looking forward to tomorrow at all 😟
