MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

You are talking about a 1000 bad screens in how many units?

Well, I just picked up my rMBP after second display change. It's an LG again.

With the first display I noticed IR after 17 days and on my second one it showed up after 2 days. As of now this third one doesn't have IR, but having it for just over an hour, it doesn't count.

If it were just a couple thousand faulty LG, then how come I got two? And this isn't just me being unlucky. There are many other users who got multiple exchanges/repairs and still got faulty LGs, too.

HI Barry, I wanna wish you luck with your purchase.

About LG displays: They are poor in quality compared to Samsung when you sit them next to each other on non-retina displays. The LG has washed out colors and less contrast. You can see that all day long...I have yet to see an LG have as nice a screen as Samsung. Even the icons in the doc are washed out and have less detail.

As far as the LG retina displays, clearly they are not as high in quality or this problem would be effecting both manufacturers.

Not that I want to disagree with you, just saying that the evidence in this situation is pretty overwhelming that the LG based retina displays have IR at a very high rate.

And in this case, I don't think any of us can say what % of LG retina screens have IR until and if this news reaches all owners. All I know is that all the LG displays I have ever seen on a Retina MBP has it.

LIke I have said earlier, I'm not prejeduce against LG, but I'm prejeduce against buying a product that has a defect, that's just not acceptable no matter how much I love OSX.

Agree, they have some big contracts, make a wide range of electronics, and some of those are of high quality, but in general who is going to make a higher quality screen across the full range of products? I think Samsung if comparing the two. Everytime I have been to the shop to buy LCDs, LG is always less money but it never seems worth it in comparison to the Samsung's quality. But lets see! Hoping you have good luck

So I called the Apple Store in Amsterdam and made an appointment for next sunday. They were suprised because they never heard of this issue and wanted me to show them.

I went to the Apple Store in Amsterdam because I was having IR issues on my 8 week old rMBP. They are aware of the Image Rentention issue, I talked to Genius named Leo he told me that certain screen had issues, the LG ones. So they would replace the screen it but they couldn't garantuee I get a Samsung screen for a replacement. He said on this issue occur, the manufacturer will do everything to fix this issue. Yup, thats why so many LG screens around with IR.

Of course now it could be just the person you talked to was no aware of the issue, or he or she is lying.

I couldn't miss my machine so I didn't leave it there for repairs, but Iet us know what they say...

Dont know why you guys are having such a hard time..first off, alway ask for the top manager of the store..explain that you spent close to 3000 or more for the machine and this is unacceptable...always buy the machine with american express...so if you have a problem and they dont want to replace the machine for you dispute it with them..telll them the unit is defective and in 99 per cent of the cases you'll at least get your money back..explain that to the manager also...now here is the thing..if you want a samsung screen..your probably not going to get one

if you order it online or from educational store...most i've seen dont..they shipped alot of those samsung screen units to the stores...tell your manager to look in the ripley or riley system..which tells him thru the serial numbers what components are in the box..they can tell if its a samsung screen...if they tell you they dont have it..tell them you know for a fact they do....and that you dont want to keep coming back for a defective LG. ...although if you get a nice manager like i did and they work with you...you may get lucky..there are some LG's that are fine...and have very decent white levels..in my store two units i tested have LG screens..there is a program called...displaydetector.dmg google it...then download it and install it on the machines they have in the stores...it will check exactly what screen is there...without the need to go into terminal mode...replacing the screen for me was a disaster..i received an LG screen..which by the way showed no signs of IR..but after a few days..i noticed the dreaded yellowing and sure enough when i went back and compared it to their machines it was obvious..now bear in mind my store wouldnt give me a new machine because it was 40 days old....i called applecare complained..you need to do that..and tell them you've spent 3000 on it...what are they going to do...you also can call regular support ask to speak to a level 2 technician explain your problem...he will ask you to send in a screen shot...then ask him if he can put in the notes that this machine needs to be replaced...if he does that...you'll have no problem when you refer to it at the apple store..they have to do what the technician wrote in the notes...but like i have mentioned my first samsung screen is great...i had software issues with it ...alot...and was pulling hair out over it...i went back and they went in back for 20 min and thru that riley ripley system found another samsung..only to find it was yellowing on the screen..and some of them blame it on glue issue which will resolve itself..no it doesnt...also if all else fails and they give you the b.s line that they wont replace it...or the screen...tell them your on 10 different blogs on the internet and you will blast their store and explain how you were treated at apple...im brutal when it comes to that...and they know me now...they are very nice to me in the stores...I guess its the way you go about getting what you want....good luck to all.....keep fighting for what you want.

Scroll down to the part where MacBook Pro retina and the old MacBook are compared. In that picture the Retina screen is clearly yellow. Basically most people are ignorant of the problems they are facing or they just don't know what to do.

I must admit I find it hard to judge the 'yellowness' of my Samsung screen.

I look at it and sometimes I think I see a yellow hue in the corner, but as I move my eyes or angle of view, it seems to come and go or move :)

Not being a professional photographer I don't have calibration equipment to check it objectively, and anyway, for my purposes, I think I can live with it. I have noticed the same on my iPad 2 at times.

As someone else commented earlier when he was staring at the checkerboard image, perhaps I should check the warranty on my Mark I eyes ;)

You expect Apple to treat all customers in the same way, but apparently.. they don't.... it depends on your Apple Store.

@abacus01 You're right, I should of been more insistent on them replacing my machine instead of just the screen. I didn't ask for the manager.. which i should of. Next week I'll go again.. see if will work then. You know, I'd rather wait for Apple to acknowledge the problem, although the longer I wait, less chance there is that they'll replace the whole machine.

Nope. It was 1.5 months old.

hey said there weren't any updates from Apple, but they could swap my mac. Unlike everyone else I preferred them replacing just my screen.

Was your machine still within the 14 day period???
