MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

So, is anyone brave enough to try one of these new 13" rMBPs?

I'm curious to see if they have IR. It would be very encouraging to find out that they don't, because it would confirm (A) that the technology can be made to work IR-free and (B) that the IR problem with the 15-inch rMBPs are limited to a large bad batch that Apple is trying to unload on customers.

Things are finally set in motion for me. I went to two Apple Service centres in my hometown in India. One of them acknowledged the issue but wasn't "certified" to work on Retina Display MBPs. The other one took a bit of convincing to acknowledge the issue. I also got through to AppleCare in Singapore. They were quite prompt in recognizing the problem after seeing the video.

They have ordered a new display for me. It should arrive in a week and they will then go ahead and change the display for me.

While talking with AppleCare in Singapore, the person did admit that Apple is well aware of the IR issue. And then he shut up like a clam realizing that I was trying to probe for more details.

Hey friends, this is my first post on the boards.

I am a college student and sold one of my kidneys for one of these machines. I absolutely love everything about the retina screen, except the major IR problem! I read other forums about hte issue and passed it off as an over reaction, until one day when I left Spotify on to play some music and came back to the screen burned into my next desktop background. Yikes!

I travelled into town to the Apple store and they sent me back ot my campus store to get a replacement, which I just did today. Came home and found out that it was another LG screen...did the IR test and sure enough, day one, signes of moderate IR. Ugh!

So my question is, does this get worse or does it get better? I seem to have read some differeing opinions on the matter and I am wondering if anyone has come to a consensus. Also, I have read stories of people exchanging machine after machine. That's a real pain in the behind, but is that the only option (other than just living with it?) Some people are reporting LG after LG time and time again...

Thanks for all the feedback!

Dude, I like your approach!

🙂

Are you also on the other site set up for this? You know, the one that rhymes with "ace crook"?

If not, you should be, and you should be an admin on it.

Well lets prepare a warm welcoming thread for all the 13 inch pro users that are about to put fire all over here!

After all 13" pro is their best selling machine and the 15" pro retina is the BEST notebook they have ever built!

I may not be in the advertising business but isnt that more like a "lie" than "good marketing"?

Their BEST notebook? There is a thread with thousands and thousands of views, countless replies, growing and gettin more and more attention day by day on a non fixed issue with their highly priced product and this is what the came up with?

First glance is new ballgame, is the pricing of the 13" lineup vs 15" lineup more likely to make the perspective buyers opt for the 15" more for value (larger screen, quad CPU or the 13" more for size and dual core? I'm sure quite a large number of rMBP's were sold that the users didn't notice various panel related issues that are associated with this support forum topic.

I also was right about no discrete GPU, and using dual core on the 13" against the small capacity battery.

Retina display is just easier on the eyes with that additional 4:1 pixels compared to a cMBR. When viewing videos, looking at product photos, reading text, it shows. It's unfortunate that a percentage of owners encountered the various panel related maladies, but who know in what quanities the rMBP's were sold since their release. I thought I read someplace that it would have been on the order of 250,000 units, but that might be a conservative estimate.

No I don't know of the other site. Would you be so kind to point me to it please?

Google "Please Recall Retina Macbook Pros with LG Displays" (all in quotes like that). Probably about the 3rd result from the top you'll find a link (or links) to a page on a social website (the one that rhymes with "mace hook").

Sorry I have to be so vague, but the thought police are everywhere!

During today's keynote, Apple (Phil) boldly reaffirmed the following on the 15' rMBP:

-Engagget: The new display is gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous.

-Verge: Best Display ever for a laptop

-Wired: Apple has undoubtedly created the best notebook display on the market.

Phil "and they are all correct".

WOW WOW WOW!
