MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

It seems my LG may not be so flawless now. I set the desktop background to gray while spending about 45 minutes reading articles in a Safari window with a white background. When I minimize the Safari window, I can see a very faint difference in the shade of gray from where the window used to be. I'll see what happens, but the consensus seems to be that these things don't exactly improve with age. At least Best Buy will take it back within 30 days, no questions asked.

Well mine is just 4 days old and my 2nd LG. The first as some will remember went back with slight IR problem but main issue was with the main graphics card which wasn't redrawing properly.

So far so good with this display which is a week 41. I've now taken out the extended warranty as I always do with iMacs and MacBook Pro's. This particular MacBook Pro's screen is lush and superb to use. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed I don't need to send it back within Amazon's 30 day returns deal. Out of that time I'm confident Apple will deal with any issue given the warranty and the fact IR seems to be becoming a widespread problem that must be addressed. I'd be gutted if I get the problem with the one I now have as I love it.

For what it's worth I got a new LG last week (w42) and on the first day I had 60 seconds IR after 15 minutes of checkerboard for. After using it solidly for 5 days I retested today and have zero IR under the same conditions.

Just to speak up and challenge the assumption that all LG screens are getting worse over time and all will eventually fail. That's my current experience.

The whites and colours are definitely better on the LG than the more yellowish samsung screen on my ipad but i've still got a week left of return time so I'm paying very close attention.

That's not good news for those of us who have ordered the 13" rMBP. I can assure you I'll be testing mine for image retention thoroughly before my 14-day return period is up and it's going back at the slightest hint of a problem. I don't think there are any 13" models being delivered with anything other than LG screens. There is no excuse for releasing a new product with this kind of defect after months of screen swaps and returns with the 15" retinas.

I've had my rMBP 15 for coming up on 3 weeks. LG screen. Zero IR. Will keep looking but I simply cannot see any. I also have a non-gray background as my preference and that makes it hard to see any IR.

Also as I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread, each person uses a computer their own way. For me my windows pretty much stay put. I'm rarely if ever minimizing everything so the background is visible. I understand IR can be seen other ways but this seems to be the way that most people are seeing it.

In the almost three weeks on my new rMBP I'm simply stunned and amazed at how this machine performs! I had a 2.66 core i7 MBP15. The BEST I ever got battery wise doing NOTHING but browsing was 2 hours. This retina MBP regularly goes 5-6 hours.

Also when doing what I do most often which is web programming using BBEdit, Medical device software in VMWare fusion under Windows 7 the machine STILL bearly gets warm. I mean it is simply amazing. I can have Windows 7 in a VM, Windows 7 64 in a VM, OS X Mountain Lion in a VM, BBEdit and Chrome browser, Mail, Calender, Contacts, all open, switching between them working, compiling, the processor graph in Activity Monitor just barely shows a few blips. Battery life runs about 3-4 hours with that load.

Simply great especially when compared to my 2012 15 MBP 2.66 core i7 where that load would have been impossible due to RAM limits and dropping one VM would have still had the fans screaming and the battery life down to 30 minutes or so.

A great machine this is... For me at least.

You're not the first to report that image retention actually got better with time, although the overall trend I see on this thread is that people report IR several weeks or months after getting their rMBPs, well after the return period is over.

Some suggest that heat is a factor in image retention - was there any difference in how hot your machine was when you tested it each time?

Nov 6, 2012 10:18 AM in response to radianlex

The first time was the computer had been out of the box in use for about an hour. The second time it had been in use pretty solidly for a few days mainly using web/itunes, with the screen brightness down to zero when not in use. There was no noticable heat from the machine on either occasion.

I'll fully shut the computer off tonight and test it first thing in the morning to see if this has any effect.

I've got a question about the samsung display after reading through these threads about how the color quality is not as good as the LG and has a warmer yellow tint. Is this just a matter of different color calibrations that can be manually adjusted in the settings? Or is it a difference in the manufacturing method (or materials) of the actual display?

I have yet to see one with a samsung display, it seems that all the apple stores & best buys I've been to only have LG displays. It'd be nice to see it first before I go through the hassle of trying to replace the LG display to see if it'll actually be worth it. I suppose if theres a major difference in favor of LG, it might be enough of a tradeoff to just stick with the image retention.

I've had my MBPR since August and I've just noticed the slight bit of IR over the weekend and just thought one of my panel's (dark gray) was semi transparent. But I not really notice it when I tab between while backgrounds with text and the solid background. It seems to clear up quick enough and most people wouldn't notice it, but it's something I'm going to keep an eye on.

I had my previous Macbook 5 years and never ever had to worry about this issue. I can confirm that my display is an LG. I hope this issue will be addressed by Apple in some light. It is definitely an issue that's growing quickly.
