MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I did the test a week ago alraedy. Today again. It takes less then 60 sec. to dissapear. But since my rMBP is only 2 weeks old, It can get worse over time.

Yes I am agree with you, without the IR it is such an amazing screen.

Let's see what Apple will do next year with the re-fresh. Sharp IGZO screens?

Have you tried this test? http://iva-soft.com/gray

Wait 5 minutes (don't look at the screen during the checkboard on it). After 5 mins the screen becomes dark gray. Check the time it takes until you can't see checkboard at all (event small signs of it).

Make the test in dark room.

For me the result is 6 minutes to disappear. I also work a lot, usually in Photoshop, Xcode and Coda.

Often see IF on Photoshop background.

Yesterday watched HD movie on it for the first time. It was awesome. If no IR it would be the best screen ever.

Well... I had mine replaced about 2 months ago, and my replacement was an LG, which at the time was fine.

Within a month the IR developed. And in the past month its got rapidly worse. It's now really irritating me. 2 minutes typing a message on facebook and I can read it on my desktop.

I've come back to this forum as I had hoped that since my last post 2 months ago, there had been a permanent solution from Apple ....but sadly not.

I'll call the store tomorrow and ask if there can to a sameday repair. I'll end up losing my BestSkinEver too 😟

I have a rMBP with a Samsung screen and an iPad 3. The iPad has a cooler white and a more reflective display. The screen on my rMBP has a very slight yellow tint on the right side mostly at the bottom and really only noticable on a white background. There is a slight variation in color I think due to the white point but both have rich colors and I can't see any difference in the blacks.

I did the test in dark room (iPad 3 vs rMBP LG). The thing I noticed is that iPad has slightly yellower display (I have Samsung screen on it I guess, as far as I bought it in the first week). Photo lies, but rMBP (LG) shows really neutral white and gray, neither yellow at all, nor cool.

What I did was made a screenshot of safari screen on iPad and opened this screen shot on rMBP.

On the photo it's not that visible (rMBP is on top). There're two photos side by side: focused on iPad first and on rMBP later.

PS If this is what I could face repairing rMBP IR problem on LG by changing it to Samsung, well, I would be able to live with it 🙂

I don't know which screen I have on my iPad 3, but it is bright white, almost bluish and even in color - a great screen! I was concerned about the screen on my rMBP initially as it seemed more yellow and not as bright as the iPad. I took it into Apple to compare it to the rMBPs in the store and it was definitely not as white in my mind. The genius people did some sort of test with black and white on photoshop I think and I was told that I had a truer white point and the ones in the store were bluish. I used the calibration program on the rMBP and have the white point set at 6800 and I'm happy with it. At this point I wouldn't consider replacing it given all the problems I've read about here with both Samsung and LG screens. In a perfect world however, I would prefer the bluish white screen minus the IR. My Sansung screen doesn't look anything like the yellow in your photos, but the Samsung screen from what I've read definitely has a warmer white than the LG and you may not be happy with it.

Received my rMBP 15" about 2 weeks ago. Ordered online and shipped straight from China. It's an LG. Didn't notice the IR at first, but after extensive use, there is IR and it appears to be getting worse. This is extremely annoying and disappointing, more so given the fortune paid and the time Apple has had to address the problem.

You know what would be awesome? If companies were as concerned about ethics as profits, took responsibility for mistakes, and fixed problems like this instead of passing them onto customers. That would be pretty sweet.

I just got a 15" rMBP with an LG display (Week 37). No hint of image retention yet, but I understand it can appear in a matter of a couple to several weeks. I already bought and returned two LGs before this - got tired of playing the lottery for a Samsung. I'd appreciate any thoughts on this:

1. If I keep the LG, is image retention avoidable on a practical, everyday basis by using a screen saver and/or setting the display to sleep? If so, what settings do you use?

2. Is trying to get a Samsung really a better deal? It seems like a number of Samsung owners are unhappy about yellow tint, backlight bleeding, dead pixels, etc.

I was lucky enough to get a Samsung on my first try, so I've only seen IR from youtube videos. I have a 2011 MacBook Air with an LG panel and the two are very similar in whiteness and contrast. I did a backlight bleed test on a black background and I have very slight bleed on the left, but something I consider to be "within spec" and not the least bit noticeable in my day to day usage. No dead pixels.

I am very happy with my Samsung display and will never go back to a "non-retina" MacBook. The ability to work at 1920x1200 effective real estate is priceless. For people who care about the screen above all else in a notebook, the price premium is worth it.

This is pretty disconcerting to see all these complaints about image retention and it still hasn't been fixed by apple. I found out about this problem just after ordering mine yesterday and find it completely ridiculous that I'm already anticipating returning it before it's even gotten to me!

That is, if it happens to have a defective LG display, which seems more than likely now that I've done some checkerboard tests on all the macbooks at the apple store. I tested 4 different retina macbook pros and all 4 of them were LG, and all but one had pretty bad image retention. I'm not really sure why the one didn't have the issue while the others did, since I looked up each serial number and they were all from the same production week (week 41).

At least I know that not all of the LG displays are defective, I just hope I get lucky and get one of the good ones, or better yet get a samsung display. It's even more ridiculous that I even need to waste my time worrying about this especially considering how much money it cost. It should be a worry free experience, and I should have complete trust that I'm going to be getting a non-defective product. Sadly, that's not the case...

In any case, I'll be raising some **** if my $3k laptop is defective, and I'll not be a happy camper if I have to return it multiple times like some of you in this thread.

welcome to the brotherhood mate! I read about this problem just 10 hours before I get my laptop and sadly it had IR and I sent it back and got my money back! there's nothing we can do about apple's policy sadly! they just care about selling more and they have sold 5.1 million of this laptop since the day it was released! The number of people visiting this thread used to be 700,000 and they have reset it and now it's again 25,000 in one week! it means around 25% of buyers have noticed about the problem! the rest of them might not know about it yet or have Samsung! I wish you luck with your purchase though! you might get a Samsung without any problem

Screen saver or display sleep helps delay burn in, but I don't think that's what we have here, at least not yet. The suggestion by the support page that those are viable solutions for image retention is just silly. My experience is that IR is unavoidable on this LG panel in realistic productivity scenarios.

I can leave a window up for 2 minutes while typing an e-mail, then switch over to another app and I see a ghost image of the previous window to the point that I can still read the text.

It takes about 2-10 minutes to go away depending on what I display. It's probably more noticeable to me because I use a lot of art and media apps (Blender, Unity, Aperture, etc.) that use dark gray skins for greater contrast with content windows.

Having ghosting artifacts running down art that I'm trying to make color and pixel perfect is not cool.

I don't know about you, but I needed this laptop to get work done, not just watch movies or stare at pretty screensavers.

It's disappointing to see that customers are forced to play the Samsung lottery. This doesn't help the case of being able to tout LG as an equivalent or superior supplier to Samsung going forward. Knowing that, you would think Apple would limit the LG supply until this problem is worked out, so we can only speculate why 5 months later they're still shipping these screens.

Until Apple steps up, or more likely quietly refreshes the hardware, ask for a refund or choose your poison.
