MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Congrats on getting a Samsung! I agree that there is no "perfect" machine. I am happy with my Samsung screen after going through 4 exchanges in store for the base model. Started with LG with mild IR, got a Samsung with washed out colors and warped lid, followed by 2 LGs I refused to accept, and finally the Samsung I have now which is near perfect. Colors and white balance look great to me but I'm no pro. Only flaw I have noticed is one of the option keys is a bit loose and that doesn't bother me. My keyboard makes the faintest hum and I believe that's normal. I can only hear it if I put my ear up to it. Nothing is perfect but getting a product that doesn't have a major defect shouldn't be so difficult.

Thank you, it was actually my 8th or 9th rMBP and this time it was replaced because of a faulty motherboard, so I got really lucky with the screen. I think that slight color shift is typical for Retina and its nothing to really worry about. With the backlit keyboard - I get that silent "bzzzzzzz" noise when i turn it on and close my ear to the "number 8" keyboard area. I can hear it also from sitting postion, but then only if i reallly really listen to it. Besides I don't really use that option - just a waste of battery 😉

Well folks it is official. I was finally given some completely honest advice from an Apple business specialist this afternoon. The advice? If I wanted a display that will meet my needs and possess the qualities I require in a display (i.e. be as bright as my previous and existing products and be image retention-free) then I would be best advised to.... You guys ready?...WAIT FOR THE PRODUCT TO BE REVISED. I really appreciated the blatant honest coming directly from Apple but the whole thing still leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.

Some people may be interested to know of Apple's extended returns policy over the Christmas period (commencing 27 October 2012).

Holiday Gift Receipt policy

http://www.apple.com/legal/sales_policies/retail_au.html

"Items purchased at an Apple Retail Store between 27 October 2012 and 25 December 2012 may be returned with an original receipt or Gift Receipt until 7 January 2013. If the item is returned in the original box, with the original packaging, we will exchange it or offer you an Apple Retail Gift Card. Refunds will be granted until 7 January 2013 only when an original purchase receipt is provided and will be based solely on the original method of payment."

Experience from Hong Kong.

Bought my rMBP in July. Came with LG screen with no IR issues. By early November, IR became evident and got worse (i.e. it develops over time). Took it in today, genius agreed with issue, and sent it in for screen replacement. Only part number available is the 661-7171...rumored Samsung screen). Instead if the 2 day wait, got call repair was ready only 6 hrs later. Ran retention test and confirmed no more IR issue. Panel was LSNxxxxx, confirming Samsung panel.

All good. No bleeding with the blacks, yellow tint with the whites, nor dead RGB pixels.

Happy gopher.

Bad news, Apple changed the IR testing standards.First Checkerboard pattern of 3 minutes, and switch to the gray-black background, after one minute, then look at the IR.So all the screen will haven't problem.Today, I went to the Genius Bar,Genius detected my LG screen and said no problem, shameless ah!Apple's own standard-setting to test their own problems, big joke!

For people saying their model is from week 45, mine is from the same week as well (LG). I received mine a few days back and ran all the tests without any problem.

I am not sure if the production has been changed but I think its still present. Someone suggested me to do this - leave the rmbp with the dark grey wallpaper and a textedit window open for the whole night (about 7 hrs).

I did this and the next morning I found that it was there but only very slightly. In fact I had to observe very carefully to see it.. It disappeared after about 5-10 mins. I wouldnt call this an issue but what I am worried about is if this will get worse over time.

Well, refer to my previous post. I also used the retention test of 3+1. IR was evident with that test and they replaced panel. I assume apple will replace if there was a real IR issue. Now you may think I must have a serious and unbearable IR issue. Reality was, it wasn't really that bad, and I even contemplated living with it. But being the perfectionist that I am, I brought it in despite the mild case and it failed the 3+1 test. So real issue warranting a real replacement.

I hope your panel gets worse so it fails the test eventually.

Well, my 15" rMBP is on order and I'm giving Apple one chance to provide me with a Samsung screen. Otherwise it's going straight back for a refund, no questions asked. And I'll wait until the next revision to upgrade. The 15" rMBP is a fantastic machine, but I'd rather wait a year than play the screen replacement game.

Mine was 3 when I got it. Yeah, I think apple is sending the returned machines to the new buyers. I used my laptop for only one hour. Then I found out it is LG and it has Image Retention, then I returned it the next day. There is no refurbished rMBP laptop in their website. and I don't think they are throwing away the new laptop which was used for only one hour (in my case). Probably they just pack it neatly and send it to the next costumer and cross fingers that people will not know about it 😀
