MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

This is getting to a rediculus level now, I got two macbook pro retina today and both of them have the IR issue and guess what the display manufacturer is its LG. So I now have 3 rMBPs (2 new once and one old one) and all of them have the IR issue. So I m returning my old one and one of the new one to apple tomorrow already got the RMA labels and shipping labels. Keeping one until the next replacement arrives.

That's crazy to be returning 3 MBPr's - they don't care that you've done 3, or are you just returning it and not saying anything about the issue?

If I were you guys, I'd all at least complain and let it be known there is a problem with them instead of just doing the mandatory 14 day return and not explaining to support anything -- otherwise, you're seriously wasting some major $'s and time. There should be a giant-*** stock of 'refurbished' computers available soon lol but seriously... I hope you are all at least letting Apple know everytime you return it so they 'get the hint' and fix the issue, or provide proper information in some form. I did at least, and feel it's the right move - and if they are *********, it's on them if they don't actually help you, then go ahead and just force a return under the 14 day policy.

yea, the manager in that store knows me by name now, and I'v been sure to tell them of the problem each time haha...they've done a lot for me, including a free upgrade for all the hassle...but you know, for a $4k computer, this shouldnt be such a common problem.

I won't speak too soon though; let's see what my third replacement looks like. my appointment is in an hour...this experience will determine my attitude toward this release.

Hi all,

I posted a few pages back that I got my week 32- 2.6/16/512 (with ML pre-installed) and a beautiful Samsung screen 2 days ago. Everything still looks gorgeous, but for those of you with the LG screens I just thought I would share this tidbit about the screen coloration. My Samsung screen has a slight pinkish tint to it (when compared to other Apple screens), as does the Apple logo. I have a yellow tinted iPhone 4, so I am no stranger to being annoyed by screen tint. Just thought I would share that for any of you with tinted LG screens thinking your pink tints might indicate a faulty LG screen. Everything pops color-wise compared to all the other screens, so I'm thinking perhaps they just calibrated these slightly differently. (you can even see the pink tint in the comparisson photos a few pages back from someone else) In the way of IR/dead pixels/brightness though, this machine is great! Not a single problem.

Also, though not related to the screen topic, I wanted to pose this question to readers of this forum, as you all seem to be (like myself) hyper-aware of any issues. Are any of you experincing any of the scroll lag that Anandtech talked about and others have discussed? I've got a clean system (no migraitons for me) and I do see this lag all over the place - Safari, Mail, etc. Not enough to make me want to return it, but still definitely enough to trouble me. Thoughts?

Thanks for the support - wishing all those swapping out the best of luck getting a Samsung/working LG!

Yes, my rMBP (2.6/16/512) lags heavily too, especially when switching between spaces and when scrolling fb or webpages in safari. I found that after reinstalling ML the bootup and shutdown times also increased significantly. Sometimes when typing in safari i experience a ghosting issue, and also when deleting text, it was deleted but doesn't disappear even when the cursor is already in front of it, kinda like a bug of software problem i think. Apparantly they said the scrolling lag was caused by the graphics card and an upcoming software update should address it (i'm not sure though) but Mountain Lion was originally supposed to address this issue, which it didn't.

I have experienced scroll lag with my rMBP, it is pretty much exactly as Anandtech described. It is quite apparent when scrolling through web pages in Safari. A few things:

1. The Mountain Lion update did help in many areas but there are still cases where the lag is apparent. It's just not nearly as bad as it was with Lion and I personally find it quite tolerable.

2. I run with the 1920x1200 HiDPI setting, and this is by far the most demanding setting. It is because the rendering is actually done at 3840x2400 and scaled down to 2880x1800 to give an antialiased effect, rather than rendered at 1920x1200 and scaled up to 2880x1800 (which looks pixellated), 3840x2400 is the largest resolution mode possible, so 1920x1200 HiDPI provides the worst performance from a lag perspective. The other resolutions are much, much less laggy.

As it is, even 1920x1200 HiDPI has sufficient performance with Mountain Lion that I don't usually notice the lag.

I have confirmed that I definitely have the image retention issue and that my panel is LG. Just to add another data point.

I am going to wait a few months and see if a general and effective solution becomes available before asking for a fix from Apple, rather than dealing with the crapshoot that seems to be the current 'fix'. As it stands, the image retention, while annoying, is not particularly impactful on my workflow and also isn't really even noticeable for me most of the time anyway. So I don't mind waiting.

Good luck everyone.

Alright, another update (back from page 30). My advanced replacement rMBP shipped out today and I found that it's a week 33. Hopefully the issue has been solved by now but I will report back with a screen comparison between the the two once it arrives. It is shipping expedited so it's going to arrive sometime Wednesday morning. 🙂

I'd be interested to know which countries are more likely to get a Samsung or LG display on their rMBPs.

Is there a 50-50 chance of getting either display type in the USA when compared to being more likely to get an LG in UK, or a Samsung in Germany for instance? Or does it depend on the spec of the machine as to which display is used?

I'm just about to push the button on buying a 2.3/16gb RAM/512 SSD in the UK and wondering what display it'll likely ship with?

Any UK users of rMBP who'd care to share their experiences?
