MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I continue to think who Apple can't sell a laptop for 2300+ euro with 50%, or more, of probability to sell you a defective laptot with Lg display!

They MUST resolve this problem, i buy it in may, and now i haven't a pc for what i pay, that money in 3 month and maybe more, if the new Mac has IR, can also do profit for me!while my money do profit for them for month, when i have nothing for what i paid!

Another thime, Sorry for my very bad english...

Thank you so much for the pics! I was being driven mad, thinking that, not only did my LG screen have IR, but its white point/contrast seemed too warm/dim. I'm pretty sold on the Samsung at this point. No IR and a brighter, more true screen. Still waiting on my "Processing" replacement, and I hope I get lucky next time!

And thanks for taking note of the rear Apple logo color. It seems that they all have a very slight purplish hue. Doesn't bother me, but I wanted to see if they were consistently like that.

I am not sure how you can come to that conclusion based on just that photo. The Samsung does look slightly brighter but then again the text also looks somewhat blown out by the brightness. Also the photo on the left has some lighting glare that is not present in the right photo. Based on just that photo alone, I would choose the left display over the right because, although it looks a little darker, it also looks less blown-out. But then again, I would never make a selection based on just that photo so it's kind of a moot point.

I today was with my friend to pick up at the reseller store his retina macbook pro 2.3 ghz 256gb ssd 16gb ram. First we wanted to know the dispaly name and they wont help us, then phoned apple care and they said they dont know the screen type. He couldn't even return it back, because of the reseller policy. I was a little disapointed, how the reseller behaved. I will of course next time, buy a mac only in a apple store or let them order for me. But anyway, i saw the screen and with the terminal command, it showed tobe a samsung screen. I must say, am really happy, to not have lead my friend in a lye, cause it is his first mac and want him be happy with it. That samsung retina screen is fantastic and georgous and i fall in love with. I hope apple doesn't disapoint me either with the screen and hope to get in this fiew days, also a nice georgous samsung screen like i saw today, greetings from switzerland.

You're welcome to interpret the photo as you wish. I have an LG screen, and I personally feel that it is too dim, and too warm. Judging from the SECOND picture, from rMBPs tested at my nearby Apple Store, and from my previous MBPs, the Samsung wins in brightness and white point. Usually people will opt for an inherently brighter screen, because they have the option to dim it. If you want a dim screen to get any brighter (once it's at max brightness), you're out of luck. Similarly, I can adjust my default warm LG screen to be cooler--giving it a blue tint, or even warmer--making it orange. But when I'm at the default color gamut settings, I want my whites to be as white as they are on my 4S and previous MBP (which they are nowhere near). When looking at the second photo, I don't see enough reflection on the left screen to warrant its relative darkness. At the same time, the Samsung screen certainly isn't so bright that it washes out whatever it's displaying. So, you're welcome to pick whichever screen satisfies you most. I'm not satisfied with mine, so I'll choose the Samsung. Leave it at that, and stop trolling.

Just a status update for my fellow longtime followers of this thread:

I sent out my first LG rMBP today, to be returned back to Apple. I opted for their prepaid shipping label and would encourage anyone else mailing a notebook back to do the same.

1.) it's free for the user and

2.) the prepaid label includes a reference number that lets Apple know when you mailed it, possibly releasing your replacement build order. (Today I was told I could not have my third rMBP order released until I mailed at least the first one back. Within a few hours, that third order now shows up as being processed. I suspect, though I cannot prove for sure, that once the USPS scans the return label Apple "knows" and can automagically unlock the replacement order.)

My third rMBP is now being built and has an estimated arrival date of Aug 21-23 via 2 day shipping. Someone on here claimed to have gotten overnight shipping, but I was never offered that and was told it wasn't possible. I'm not doubting the OP of that info, I'm merely stating that I was not able to get it. YMMV.

Additionally, I can confirm that the rMBPs now ship with Mountain Lion preinstalled. My replacement unit from week 33 had it preinstalled, though my first order did not. Furthermore, though I installed ML on my first machine, resorting to an Internet Recovery yielded Lion only. I have read hypotheses about Macs getting updated for Internet Recovery once one upgrades the machine, but that does not appear to be the case. Whatever it came with, that's what you're limited to, even if you purchase/redeem ML from he MAS. A minor thing, but potentially annoying if someone has to to an Internet Recovery of Lion then has to wait to install ML on top of that.

Finally, once a rMBP is set up for return to Apple, an email apologizing for it being DOA is sent. The subject for me was "DOA Returns and Replacements (U.S,Canada,Mexico)". I can't vouch for international folks, but screens with IR are given the DOA label.

The Quest for a Samsung Display continues!

I was the one who supposedly got complimentary overnight shipping, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was just the normal expedited service (it seemed odd that I'd be offered a shipping service that they didn't originally give us the option of). Perhaps they only hold your replacement if it's your third or more order? I was told pretty clearly that my advanced replacement would ship out regardless if I returned my current machine--that I would simply be charged for another rMBP if I didn't return it within 14 days. I received a prepaid shipping label to send it back, but am hoping that I can instead return it to my local Apple Store. I don't fully trust USPS, and I don't want Apple to seek retribution on my credit card, if USPS loses the MBP in transit.

Well, today I get to pick up my third replacement for my 2.7/16/768...

I'm extremely nervous about this. They told me that if it happened a third time they wouldnt keep replacing them for me. I'm going to test it right there in store before I even take it home, does anyone have any advice for me if it does have IR again, and they say they can't swap it out?

Holding my breath, crossing my fingers and throwing salt over my left shoulder...

Are you buying directly from Apple? And if so, how are you getting the CTO in the store maxed out?

I have not had any issues (at least not so far) with Apple telling me "okay, this is it. No more tries for you." While frustrating, my experience has been that the AppleCare reps have been trying to be very helpful in getting this resolved for me.

Aug 10, 2012 3:42 PM in response to JMF

you can see my story around page 30 or so, but I was one of the first to buy online...waited the 4 weeks and got the burn in. took it to my local apple store and they orchestrated the swap. still had the issue. (both screens were LG) I called applecare but they refused to help because they said now the store has become involved, so I have to go through them.

The genius at the store told me that after the 3rd they probably wont replace any more because he claimed it was a firmware isue that would be resolved with an update soon. So if they refuse me replacement, and apple care wont help, I'll be SOL.

I love the rest of the computer though, this is really frustrating for me. I just want this bada** machine to work!!
