MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

So can people stop doing such long tests and just do short ones with a colorful background and then tell me if they get IR. and if you want to do a long one can you vary it up and do a long one and then switch to another program via expose and show me IR then. I don't care about IR on a grey background after a stupidly long time on one image as my iMac will even do that so its nothing new to me. I have never noticed it in any normal production use so as long as the retina is like that why do people care?

Well, I didn't do any kind of test. Just surfed the web a couple of minutes and there it was (the IR, that is) and since I'm a graphic designer, I need my display to work properly. No, let me rephrase this: since I paid 2.499€ it MUST work properly, even if I was an average Joe (no offence) and not a professional. Sorry if this is of any annoyance to you . . .

This is exactly my point. I paid $3,500 for a laptop that I expected to have no problems and then IR shows up after 5 minutes of testing. That's ridiculous. If you are annoyed that we strive for perfection then you can stick with your rMBP and go have your own fun with your computer. @Cricker

I'm an editor/animator full time and even though I'll spend long times in a program I'll also usually be flicking between programs heaps.

Scripts, emails, google searches etc etc pretty rare I'd be in fcp, AE or C4d for a complete hr without ever flicking once. That's why I want some more reasonable tests done. Like working in normal programs with normal colorful desktop graphics. Then id be concerned if I had a massive IR issue. If its just obvious on a grey background from long tests then meh.

My first rMBP, IR happened after 30 minutes. My second one IR happened 5 minutes right out of the box.

I have 2 more incoming. Hopefully one of them Samsung.

Have you got a picture of IR occurring over the top of another program?

No, but I'd imagine with my second laptop after extensive use ~3hrs of C4d or any editing program and then you go on to edit something else with another program that's lighter in color you would be able to see it.

Oh please, just let me know if I'll have to cut back working on a grey web design after spending so much money . . . What am I going to tell my client? "Sorry, my display doesn't allow your color choice"?

I think this misses the point, there is the fact that my C4D background is dark grey so I can see ir after only 5 mins, but more than that

- apple seem to be avoiding the issue and not telling us if this problem would get worse with time.

- most of us seem to be using graphics program's, and bought this (despite the big price oremium) because of apples claims for the screen, they never mentioned vibrant colour with the ghost of your last screen mixed in ;)

- we know that the Samsung screens do not seem to have the problem, meet apple keep sending out the substandard LG screens, this is unacceptable to make quality a lottery for such an expensive premium laptop.

If u want the problem better appreciated by apple I'd suggest taking it into other forums to get it more widely appreciated. Once it hurts apple sales you'd certainly think they get onto it faster. Everyone should start a new thread on about 5 different forums. Oh and make IR comments on each retina review from all the big sites. That will vastly improve "people's awareness" and therefore "apples awareness".

Hello folks,

MacBook Pro Retina (stock model) from June 18th here, only started noticing IR two days ago (probably because I use a Cinema Display attached to it most of the time).

I have a LG display (darn!)

I set up an appointment at the Genius Bar here in Montreal and they told me they could repair it (not exchange it of course, beyond 14 days...), but they don't have the part (whole top of clamshell including display), so they are ordering one (3-5 days), then I have to bring in my rMBP, then leave it there for 2-3 days...

sigh

I am extremely disappointed about the quality control process for the last few years. This is my 18th Apple laptop since 2005 (I buy and resell at each new model release) and I have already returned two laptops in the past two years for display related problems, also two iPads (1st and 3rd gen), and at least one of my iPhones had the ugly yellow tinted thing going on...

I hope for a Samsung display because of the feedback about their quality. But it's looks like Russian roulette, except in reverse (you only get lucky once maybe) !

It's so noticeable and happens in less than five minutes of bright static images then switching to darker backgrounds. It's also *very* persistent, as I turned the brightness all the way to dark/no light and back up a few minutes later, and it was all there still...

Sad. So much money.

(Apologies for double posting, I just had a case of the dual Apple IDs not being merged...)

You don't need any reason to change a rmbp with IR, like a use Photoshop or other. You can only love dark gray background and use safari all day, you spent 2300+ euro, you have all right to do wath you want whit yuor pc, also stay all day to wath dark gray background or turn arround the mouse for hours..

Another time, Sorry for my very bad english..

I'm quoting 100% of what you said. The voice must be spread about this issues.

Try to speak to a manager. I got mine on june 20th. Then I started noting the IR in the middle of july, but i was in college at that time and there was no apple store near me. I got back home this friday and set up a genius bar appointment on saturday. The first guy i talked to said they could repair it. Then i spoke to the manager, and he offered me a replacement.
