MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I would say… let Safari open, browsing webpages as usual. If your panel is defect, you probably will notice minor IR on it. Simply, just like my case.

After one month normal usage, the panel start wearing off. I do not think the test will lead to the worst case scenarios. Simply go to Apple Store and randomly pick a cMBP to compare with a rMBP. Especially pay attention for place where Dock icons locate.

If Apple's IPS panel could not fulfil our normal usage, I would not consider it as a mature technique.

Oh, I'm not testing it anymore. I just using it regularly and stating the fact that theres no IR. LCDs been around for awhile and people already know issues of "burn-in." No need to do any extensivie tests on it. The first couple of days I had it, I did test it once or twice just because of what I've been reading on this thread, but after that, just regular use.

considering the purpose of this thread is to monitor this burn-in issue, i am interested in knowing if people have recieved one that is working properly and it makes sense that if you are following this thread than you are too. it's also relavent how well Apple is treating people with this issue. leaving a safari window open for a few minutes is not "beating on it".we don't need to know every step of the way, but a quick, "i got one three days ago and it's working great" is good. once this thread dies away, we can be confident at least that it's safe(r) to buy.

Hello,

I received my rMBP just before the middle of July and it's been great. No IR issue. I checked it again yesterday with the gray background, just to be sure. Nothing.

Personally, I find it hard to believe that the problem is as widespread as this thread seems to indicate, because there's almost nothing in the news about it. When the iPhone 4 had the "antenna-gate" issue, which I think most people would agree was kind of blown out of proportion, it made it to CNN and several other major news websites. Even ZDNet, which is notorious for "anti-INSERT_OS_PLATFORM_HERE" zealots, doesn't seem to have anything regarding this rMBP-specific issue. I searched for "burn-in" and "ghosting", both of which turned up lots of results, but the only relevant article I found was from March 2012 regarding the iPad 3 retina display.

Anyway, I do believe that this is a definite issue for the people who've been unlucky enough to experience it, but I think it's fairly rare.

Cheers,

Peter

I've got one about 3 weeks ago on week 30 and it's the best computer I've ever had so far. (LCD panel Samsung)

And I've got all sort of computers from HP, DELL, iMac, and Mac Pro. It beats them all without a question and I do developing and networking so I do work with these machines for real.

I paid all my saved on it and I don't even know how this last long, but where ever you are and what ever you do go get one of these if you' need a brand new machine.

But let me be totally honest with you. Be careful what you wish for. After using this machine for few days, every screen is going to look as ugly as you can imagine! And the speed. My Mac Pro with 6-core Intel Xeon looks slow in front of this machine because of its super fast flash storage.

I'm lovin it and I hope I can keep it for at least 3 years.

Best of luck.

we are all interested in buying a retina macbook pro, or bought one and are sharing a common problem with it. that's why we are following this thread on the burn-in issue. before sending an email to all our inboxes please consider wether you are actually contributing to the purpose of this thread.

Yeah.

I got my 1st rMBP on later June with IR issue out of box. Then, I went to the Genius bar, and they replaced a new rMBP to me.

The 2nd rMBP seemed all right at begining becasue I tested it once. Later (after a month), the mountain lion came out. I upgraded my rMBP and noticed a thread that question if there is anyone got IR issue after upgrading to ML. So I checked my rMBP 2nd time. Unfortunately, I had IR issue on the 2nd rMBP.

This time, I went to Genius bar again. They offered me two options: the first option is waitting for a new machine; the second one is to return it. I chose the latter.

Last Sat, I brought the 3rd rMBP from Apple Store. I could identify minor IR from the Calendar Dock icon yesterday. But I cannot jump to conclusion too soon. I am going to see if this panel is defective or not within 14 days.

I told that just for you! 😉 Good luck.

PS:

And BTW, I'm on page 1 of this thread. SO realize how many I've got in my inbox when I've got Samsung without any IR. So you've got problem with that you see stop notification email.

i'm sorry i didn't mean to offend you. there was just nothing about the burn-in problem which is the topic of this thread. actually that's not even true, you did state you have a week 30 which is relavant so i am sorry. I also confess I haven't followed the thread for that long.

it is very random which ones have this issue isn't it? or is it confirmed that the samsung screens ones don't have the issue at all? have there been confirmed cases in the samsung model? are LG and Samsung the only two manufacturers or are there others?

Aug 13, 2012 10:56 AM in response to Maziyar

That is not true, i do have IR on my rMBP with Samsung screen and i did posted a few pages back. Unless you consider slight IR as no IR then no Samsung screen has had major IR issue to date as much as we know of. If not mistaken there was another member that posted about slight IR with his Samsung screen rMBP replacement weeks ago so i wouldn't say all Samsung screens are free of fault.

I received a week 32 2.6/16/512 macbook pro with an LG screen this morning. After a short period of usage (5 minutes), the safari browser window border was clearly visible on the dark gray background when minimized.

What is the consensus on the best way to pursue a replacement - calling apple or taking it to an apple store?

Take it straight to an Apple Store and save your time. I talked today to an Apple woman on the phone and after 20 minutes of all kind of resetting and system checks, she just took an appointment at an Apple Store for me.

This is exactly how it went for me:

Got mine on July 26th, no problems at all until August 11th, when the IR problem showed up. I have an LG display, 2.3GHz with 16GB Ram 256GB, built week 30

Oh yes you were the first one mention this and I did comment on yours. We are in the same country remember me. (Malaysia)

But you said it gets gone by restarting I thought it would be a software or something. But if it is a IR issue well it's too bad that the Samsung has this problem too. Even less than LG but still has it.

Thanks.
