MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Today I went into best buy. Just to look at the retina they had there, ran the script it is a Samsung (mine is an lg with MINIMAL IR that I asked for a replacement and it should be here in a couple days)

Switched to dark grey on the best buy unit and saw no ir HOWEVER I did see very ugly lines that ran horizontal from the window that was open and would follow it . They looked similar to how the IR would look but almost looked like interference. Best buy has a lock plugged into one of the USB ports maybe it's due to that. I unplugged it's power source and that didn't help it. I took pics but I'm on my phone right now. When I get home I will upload the pics. But man it was disconcerting that the Samsung had those lines. The colors did look better than my lg screen (just as the apple store Samsung screened unit looked better than my lg unit)

Oh, con happen to find a display with a broken line or very defective screen, but this is different to fact that every ,or most of, Lg screen have IR.

This is rare case, equal to find a Mac with a defective fans...

I think is very important the view of some has an Lg screen with IR and now have a Samsung screen, becouse They really know the problem and really see if the new one is without IR.

We can say that the majority of faulty displays are LGs, but to say that the majority of LG displays are faulty is just wrong.

I propose to make a statistic out of it. Just tell manufacturer and week build of you faulty display. We could try and find a constant here.

I'll start:

LG week 30

Hi everyone again. I just received my brand new advanced replacement rMBP. It's the same configuration of my previous one: 2.7/16gb/512, build week 33, and it came with a Samsung screen! Made my morning just now and I have yet to see IR appearing withing minutes like on my LG one but I will update if I see anything at all wrong with the screen or the laptop itself. It's been around ~15 minutes and Safari leaves no signs of IR on the darkest grey background provided by the stock wallpapers. When I hif the dock there also was no IR. I haven't heard of anyone getting a week 33 and after that isn't Samsung so hopefully you guys will too!

Hi DJ Coffee,

Would you mind trying out the test I suggested yesterday?

Basically, set your desktop background to solid charcoal gray (the darkest of the 3 solid gray options), open up this checker board pattern...

...and blow it up as large as you can on your screen.

Then, wait for about 15 minutes (make sure your MBP doesn't go into screen saver mode) and close the checker board picture.

Please let us know if you can still see the checker board pattern on your Samsung LCD.

Thanks,

Peter

It depends on what background is being used. I tested for IR and looked extremely close to areas I have left and was able to see IR on all the "opaque" colors. If you use the "Lake" wallpaper provided by Apple, IR will still continue to show through in most of the background. So lets say someone finds their own background and IR appears all over the place on it just like the solid dark grey? I don't think the IR has anything to do with the background. The fact is that it's there and does exist. Just because it doesn't show on your current background doesn't mean it won't show on others! I read earlier that it had something to do with the color of the dark grey, but I can prove that IR does not show on only specific colors. It will show on all colors and it just depends how easily noticeable IR becomes on certain colors.

Anyways... here is my update for the Samsung replacement I have:

Completely NO IR with Picnaut's test on the Samsung display! I'm very pleased with this screen at the moment though I do notice that whites are a bit warmer than my LG display. That doesn't bother me though because the Samsung does seem to have better color than the LG in general. I'll upload a few photos comparing the two later, but I don't have the time now. (I have to get to work! D:)

I do have a question to everyone who owns a ML equiped rMBP though. Does your screen flick to black before going to the login screen/desktop? Because both my rMBP do. This is an example of exactly how it behaves like on YouTube: http://youtu.be/931ozjd1gWU

You can see that the screen immediately turns black before entering the desktop. Is this normal because it's happening on both my LG and Samsung screens? My friend says that his Samsung display doesn't do that but mine does and I have a feeling it's software related.

Hi DJ Coffee,

Glad to hear your new Samsung display is AOK.

As for your comment regarding the background chosen, I totally agree. The background has absolutely nothing to do whether or not image retention occurs, because if your rMBP has the problem, it has it no matter what image is displayed. It's just that with certain images (i.e. the zebras) the picture is too busy to easily see the retained image. That charcoal gray background simply shows the problem the best.

Alternatively, one could leave their background picture as it is and simply open up an image of a charcoal square...

...and move the square around. The retained image will appear wherever the square is. This actually seems to illustrate more clearly what's indeed happening. It will look as if you're dragging a nearly opaque piece of plastic over the image and only the portions of the image with the greatest contrast will be visible (i.e. zebras).

Cheers,

Peter

P.S.

I've contacted the nearest repair centre to see what my options are (I've had my rMBP for over a month now).

I've had two LG displays, not sure what the weeks were (that serial link posted always came up with 'no units found' for me) and both of them had terrible IR.

Just picked up my third rMBP 5 days ago and it has an LG screen, but as of now no IR. the serial site gives me the same error, so I don't know what week it is.

so to summarize:

1. LG: IR

2. LG: IR

3. LG: no IR (yet)

Exact same scenario.

Third rMBP, LG, no IR. Tested for 30+ minutes.

I might keep this one. But I have another rMBP coming so I'm hoping that one is Samsung.

Week 33 btw

Just a sidenote... I got my rMBP on July 26th, but the build week should be the 30th, which goes from July 23rd to July 29th. Some people report a build week 33 (August 13th - August 19th), but how is that possible?

Statistical update so far:

LG week unknown (4x)

LG week 23

LG week 30

LG week 32
