MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Thanks! (FYI for Anyone reading through this, I needed to install developer tools to make the above Terminal command work)

Yup, it must be a Samsung:

LSN154YL01-A01

Color LCD

I'm assuming that's good? Or will I be eating image retention crow in due time? 😝

(Had a Plasma TV in my time...know FULL WELL how annoying image retention can be. Thought I'd share that!)

It looks like you won the rMBP display lottery dude. Congratulations!

Now, just pray that nothing breaks down on your machine and guard it with your life against damage and/or theft, because you might not be as lucky if you end up having to replace your machine or display panel.

This is the reason why I'm still involved with this thread, because although my IR-laden LG display was replaced with a flawless Samsung like yours, there's a good chance I won't be as lucky next time...at least not until Apple cleans up their act and fixes this issue.

To be honest though, after a year of speaking out about this, it's pretty disheartening to see the issue still present with a new release. That being said, Apple does buy all of the components required for the entire life of a product, up front, and the Haswell update on the 15-inch rMBPs is not that dramatic a change, so it's very likely that Apple is still pulling their displays from the same crummy spin-the-wheel-and-cross-your-fingers batch.

In any case, unless Apple fixes their display problems, I will not be upgrading anytime soon and I will likely use my current machine for a long time.

@LifeReceiver, lel62

Same here, there's no information except for `Color LCD` with ioreg -lw0 | grep "EDID" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6 on a 15" late 2013 base model.

I tried your commands, LifeReceiver, and got this for the last one:

???????"??!xo??UL?%

PT?@?4p0 6K??Color LCD

?

I don't find any evident retention or other quality issues – but this is my first day in front of a more decent screen.

As there seem to be people getting Samsung display info from these searches I guess they sold something else to me.

Oh wow. Good to know!

I never even knew this problem existed until yesterday, a few hours before I marched out to grab one. I'm INSANELY picky with my displays, and certainly would notice any yellow-ish dicolorations if there any to be seen. If it's said that I won the screen lottery, that's discouraging.

Good luck people, just wanted to chuck my experience into the pile. Usually, it's a vocal minority spoiling things for everyone.

You can trust I'll be back right here if my experience shifts from positive. It's only day 2 of owning this thing...

I have one of the first 2012 rMBPs with a Samsung screen and very minimal yellow tint in the lower right corner. It is only noticable on a white background or on this website with the very light grey border and I didn't even notice it until I started following this forum. The screen is beautiful otherwise and the slight yellow tint has not gotten any worse over the year that I have had it. In a perfect world I would prefer that it not be there, but considering all the issues I have seen here, I feel lucky to have gotten a great computer with this minimal issue and would not even think of trying for a better screen.

If you don't experience any other issues, you will be just as happy, if not more so, a year from now. My rMBP is the best machine I've ever used, let alone owned. It really is a pleasure to work with.

BTW, on a side note, if any of you have not upgraded to "Mavericks" yet, I strongly encourage you to do so. It's really worth the upgrade.

Odd comment!

It's not that odd really, because I kind of know what he's talking about. You get a small handful of people screaming for pages and pages about a rare issue and it gives the impression that a problem is more prevalent than it actually is.

However, in this case, due to the statistically improbable percentage of replacement rMBPs that kept coming back with IR, I really believe that this is a definite issue and has not been blown out of proportion.

Oct 25, 2013 10:58 AM in response to Canuck1970

It's unneccessary to state that a small minority of people are spoiling it for others.

If someone has spent money (a lot) on a product, they want it to work as stated. Coming onto a forum and discussing that issue is perfectly understandable but to state they are spoiling it for others is ludicrous. No one is forcing someone to come on and read the issues that some people encounter.

I would agree that in some cases it's a handful of people that have issues but that's not spoiling it for others!

Buggy as ****.

Edit: Haha, I got censored. I used the h-word, not the s-word.

Not for me.

It fixed my wake on wifi issue and I love the new features. This is a bigger and better upgrade than Mountain Lion was to Lion, for sure.

In your case though, did you run disk utility first and correct any errors before you upgraded?

I did a little research before I pulled the trigger and followed the recommendations.

The upgrade was seemless.

You can still do this after-the-fact though and it will likely fix the bugs you're seeing.

You should probably jump to the "Maverick's is Buggy As S--t!" thread for these issues though.

I would like to share my story and see if anyone has any suggestions at this point. I purchased the Macbook Pro Retina 15 MC976LL/A at the end of March 2013 from Best Buy. Upon purchase, the laptop was exceptional and the screen was defect free other than a small almost faint defect in the glass the size of a pen tip. There was no yellow tint, backlight bleeding or IR. In the past 2 weeks the small defect actually got worse and chipped out of the screen. I took it into to the Apple store and they replaced it with the LG SJA2 under warranty. The previous screen I had was a Samsung and compared to this LG it was much sharper, brighter and had a little less contrast and saturation. IMO I liked the Samsung much better. Not that the LG is bad in any means, its just not as sharp. I do photography for a hobby and always calibrate my screens with my Colormunki Display. After calibration it seemed that the contrast and saturation were still very high compared to my previous Samsung and my external LG monitor. Since everyone on this forum seems to be having extremely bad luck with replacement Samsungs, should I just suck it up and deal with the difference or should I push to get Apple to give me the correct Samsung screen i originally paid for? My concern is if I go back and request the Samsung, what if its actually worse than the LG I currently have? It sounds like the new Haswell machines that were just released have all Samsung displays and are mostly defect free. If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated.

Thanks for helping us out. Do you know if Image persistence is absent on new 13 inch macbook pro. I am a firsttime buyer of macbook so a bit cautious.

To anyone wondering about the 13" model: Please see my detailed post on page 558.

I've decided to take back the 13" retina and opted to buy an 11" MBA, since this has the highest pixel density (135 ppi) of the non-retina MacBooks, and it's only a bit over 2lbs! Anyway, I don't game or anything. I'm just a grad student at MIT, and I already have a 15" high-res MBP (128 ppi) for use at work. I just needed something for use at home, mainly with an external monitor with the occasional use sitting in the living room. I do like pretty screens though! If you're on the fence, consider the 11". I was surprised how much I liked it after using it for two weeks. Plus, I picked up a 256gb model refurbished for just $1,019.
