MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

Based on what other people have wrote and my own experiences: yes, it will get worse. Will it get to the point that the machine is unusable? I don't know; no one has reported that. But you can expect it to continue to get worse. Will Apple give you another computer? No. People here have reported that when outside the warranty period, Apple won't do any service on the machine. They will charge around USD$600 to replace the display. And many people who have replaced the display have reported other strange issues like yellow colour tinting.

I'm having the same issue on my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012). Got even worse after Yosemite. This will be the last Apple product for the household since it seems like they're just going to ignore the issue. These machines cost way too much to have an issue like this just be blown off by a company that makes billions and billions. Such a bummer.

I miss the good ol' days of Apple Computers.

I think this will probably be my last, too. Sorry it's happening to you and I agree -- before Yosemite I had barely noticed it. I expected more for a very expensive laptop intended to last more than 2 years.

the same for me: next mac will be a mac pro with Lacie (or non apple) screen. I find the quality of apple screens very disappointing: I have backlight on ipad air 2 (and I will likely request APP+ changes until having a good screen) and on my MBP retina late 2013.

I let you look at this picture (of mu rMBP scree at 100% brightness though) and I would like to know what you guys would advice me to do: I fear to have a replacement screen worse than current one and I wonder whether to keep it or to try the lottery of replacement.

Any experience / feedback please?

Remind us about the history of your machine. Have you had any replacements yet? Is this the display that the machine came with? What's wrong with it? Does it have image retention? Does it have bad colour? Is it just backlight bleeding? Yeah, if you replace it, you will probably get a worse one. I'm on my 5th display.

THanks for the reply: this is the original screen without any former replacement and has only the issue of backlight. No dead pixel or retention.

IS there a chance that screens´ quality has improved recently? Just a hope in case I decided to change it....but I can understand that you would not advice it vs what I currently have, correct?

If your only complaint is a little bit of backlight bleeding and you don't have image retention and you're satisfied with the colour I urge you to not replace it because you will get one that is yellow or green tinted, like I have 4 times. My last display replacement was in August 2014 and they have not gotten better.

Today I received my 4th Macbook Pro 15". 4th unit with display problem. The right side of the screen is just tinted yellow. I see it very clearly tight now, writing this text. I am extremely disappointed with their quality control. I give up. I really dreamed about the MBPr for some time. What a s...t. Moreover this unit is noisy like no other before. Just a constant strange noise from the left side. Such a great system, design and idea...with such not uniform screen. Left side white, right side yellow.

Did any of your four have image retention issues? I was hoping to get some good reports from people using the latest units. My two year old MBPr has dreadful image retention. I guess the only option is to wait until the next screen technology arrives.

I don't think that retention was present. To be honest I checked only 1st unit for that issue (retention) as all 4 units showed such color issues, discoloration, tints or backlight bleeding that checking retention was only a waste of time for me. That's a short experience with 4 MBPr units with maxed out setup.

1st-Half screen yellow. Obviously visible in calendar/text reading/all white and bright backgrounds like this site (the left gray stripe was gray, the right was yellow)

2nd-Whole screen pinkish (pretty uniform but pink. Can't calibrate with Xrite i1 Display Pro. Result was almost the same.

3rd-Terrible and unacceptable backlight bleeding in corners (saw it just on a start-up screen). Screen with slightly pinkish/greenish gradient however better then in 1st unit. The white was closer to white then other units. On the other hand , a red/green cast was obviously visible on black/dark screen.

4th-Noisy sound from the case. Half screen yellow (much lower whitepoint) and dimmer in one corner. Unacceptable.

4 exchanges are enough for me. Thank you Apple, do some QC improvement and u will get one customer back again. The funny thing is that I have two monitors at home. One is 24", cheap, 7 years old LCD, bought from store shelf, used for every day stuff. Never had any problems with it terms of white, uniformity, backlight etc. Second one is professional so there are no issues as well.

I have a mid 2012 retina and just started noticing the issue now. I don't have to leave it for very long to see the burn in. A real bummer after spending more than $2000 on it. I have some really old NEC IPS panels for the desktop that don't show any burn in.

My Macbook from mid 2012 have the issues with ghosting :-( See below image - ghosting after less than 2 min.

I have talked with the store how sold me the mac, and the reply was: "Apple do not recognize this as a production error"!

But what i don´t understand is - why is Apple replacing the panel when they dont recognize this as a error ???. Why is it possible to get it replaced if you get it by a genius at the Apple store?? A laptop at a price at 2600$ i really expect more from the fruit corp.!! No wonder that they are having their best economic results ever!
