MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Find out your build week: http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php Put the serial in the top left corner bar

Find out your display manufacturer: Open Terminal, copy & paste:

ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

and then press Enter. If the result starts with LP it's an LG, if it starts with LSN it's a Samsung.

we're just saying that it IS a fatal flaw, as the issue is on the screen, and the screen is what makes it cost $2k extra.

If I wanted a poopy screen I would have bought something cheaper with a poopy screen.

I understand those of you without problems are happy about your machines - and I'm happy for you as well. But don't forget about us little folks who were dealt a terrible hand. We're not being malevolent, we're just trying to get what we paid for.

sorry for my childish language but if I said the adult word they would have censored it anyway.

I'm not angry at people on this forum, i.e. the royal "us" you so eloquently used. I am annoyed with YOU and other likes you that actually think this might be our fault, thus perpetuating exactly what Apple is hoping for. don't drag others into it.

An image can't saturate your cones/rods if you haven't looked at it... derp. I don't even know why I'm arguing something so obvious.

and for your viewing pleasure, since you really seem to enjoy these:

I assume you're referring to one of my more recent posts. In fact, I can't think of what else you might be mentioning because I haven't read any comments by anyone else besides my own that could be interpreted in this way.

I think it's a gross mischaracterization of my comments to suggest that they are advocating "burying our heads in the sand". I'm just saying that people may find their and Apple's time is less wasted if they give Apple some time to come up with a solution to this problem rather than playing Samsung roulette.

Actually, it's quite easy. If you are still able to return it for a refund / exchange, please do so, if you are unhappy with your purchase.

I've had 5 different MacBook Pro and had 4 of them exchanged. The currently quality issues are definately REAL. I had slight ghosting on my first one, the others I didn't bother too look at, as they had other issues, like dead pixels, dust under the screen (which is the worst, as you are able to see every single detail of the dust particle because of the small pixels illuminating it). I had similar issues with my iPad (3rd gen) purchases this year. Almost all had dust under the glass. Buying a device because of the screen, simply imlies to me that it should be pretty much close to perfect. Any manufacturing issues are not acceptable.

I must admit I am hoping that my next unit has a Samsung screen, but if this replacement has ir, I intend to ask for my money back. I am not willing to play ping pong with Apple until they become awkward about replacing it.

If it comes to a refund, I will consider what else is on the market and decide whether to wait until they consistently make good retina displays so it is not a quality lottery, or whether to but another high end make (shame Samsung don't make a laptop with their retina display on :). )

This must be a major PR nightmare waiting to blow up to Apple. Here is a company fighting a rival in every court of the world about copying Apples technology......and their flagship computer relies on Samsungs screen to work properly !

No wonder they are trying to keep it low key.

what about those of us who need a laptop ASAP for school or other purposes? I wasn't referring to anyone specifically. I only recall some people (I don't really follow exactly who writes what.. there are a sh1t tonne of posts on here) saying things to the effect of letting apple figure it out.

so am I supposed to sit by idly and wait for the 14 day period to expire? How will apple know there is an issue if no one says anything. Again.. you prove that *some* apple users treat the almighty apple as some sort of god who can hear your prayers and may answer you in his (her?) own time.

if that's not burying your head in the sand, I don't know what is.

Hm, I'm getting a little tired of having to write this.

I don't think anyone on this forum (myself included) has ever said that the IR issue is not a flaw.

All I'm saying is that the most effective way to deal with this may be to wait a little while and give Apple some time to come up with a fix, rather than asking for replacement after replacement right now when there obviously isn't any coherent recognition of the problem by Apple Support, or a coherent response to the problem.

I'm not advocating denial; I'm just arguing against hysteria. Somewhere between denial and hysteria is, I think, the correct response to this problem.

As far as I know, Samsung is just their manufacturing partner who get's the equitment and blueprint for production provided / ordered by Apple. Most likely they just own technologies and capacities to ramp up a production of a certain screen. However I doubt they can use the technolgy invented by Apple/Share to produce their own retina LCD screen.

Aug 15, 2012 1:36 PM in response to vertigro

Yea, the list makes sense. Quanta gets batches of screens when they produce the MacBooks, so the week of production is highly correlated with a certain batch (first in first out). Say in week 32 they got 3 different batches of screens per supplier, there's still a chance those batches are of different quality, but most likely they are similar.

Ding Ding Ding we have a winner. That's exactly how I feel. I have been using Apple products since 2001, I have spent thousands of dollars and I do truly love its products but I will never ever drink the cool-aid that some do.

It's truly pathetic seeing some people defend Apple and explain how a defective $4000 purchase is not a big deal. Can you say cultist much?

Good luck with your computer.
