MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

what about those of us who need a laptop ASAP for school or other purposes? I wasn't referring to anyone specifically. I only recall some people (I don't really follow exactly who writes what.. there are a sh1t tonne of posts on here) saying things to the effect of letting apple figure it out.

An rMBP with IR issues is still a perfectly usable laptop computer, for the vast majority of use cases. So you have to decide if you want to use one despite the IR, or not. If you don't, return it and get a different laptop. If you do, then use the rMBP and get the IR fixed whenever it is most convenient for you at a later time when school isn't going to interfere. Of course, you have to be willing to gamble that Apple will fix the issue months from now when you have the time to address the issue. If, in a few months, Apple still doesn't recognize this issue, or have a coherent strategy for fixing the issue for affected customers ... well, then I'll be just as hysterical as anyone else over the issue.

I only recently read about this on TUAW and did a check on my rMBP. If I understood the directions correctly I have an LG panel from week 24.

I don't see any ghosting or any other problem with this display. It all looks great: nice and bright, no dead pixels, great contrast.

I couldn't help but notice that your list says that I should have a faulty display. Does this mean that maybe my display will go bad?

Ding Ding Ding we have a winner. That's exactly how I feel. I have been using Apple products since 2001, I have spent thousands of dollars and I do truly love its products but I will never ever drink the cool-aid that some do.

It's truly pathetic seeing some people defend Apple and explain how a defective $4000 purchase is not a big deal. Can you say cultist much?

Good luck with your computer.

This is my first Apple computer. I can say 'cultist' but I am quite sure that the term doesn't have anything to do with me.

What I think is pathetic is ad-hominem attacks that really don't contribute anything to the discussion.

This list doesn't say you "should" have a faulty display, only that some others in this thread have had a fault display with their rMBP produced during the same week.

That said, some people that initially said their LG screen was "fine" later discovered it wasn't, though I'm not sure if this means that it takes time for the problem to occur (sometimes) or if their method of testing changed over time.

Gurl, I wasn't referring to you. Attacks, really? Different of opinion is not an attack. Unless I missed some nasty posts.

Everyone is here expressing their concerns, at the same time there are some who totally dismiss them as non-sense.

Don't be so sensitive and try to understand where the frustration is coming from.

Have a nice day.

The terms 'cultist', 'drink the kool-aid', and 'pathetic' are all terms pejoritive terms, they are not terms expressing differences of opinion.

Man up and admit that you're just trying to insult people. Unless you are doing it without even realizing you are doing it, in which case I recommend not posting anything until you can figure out how to write what you mean to say.

And, I have yet to read a SINGLE post where anyone dismisses the issue as nonsense.

I learned from everything I went through with the new iPad that it is best to sit on the sidelines for the first few months of any new Apple release. I got my iPad 1 in September, and it was perfect. I went through two iPad 2s before giving up. Both had major light leakage. The iPad 3 had major flaws in the first few months. Bad screen discoloration, tints, dust, light leakage, dark corners, dark sides, dead pixels, and a whole bunch of other flaws. I finally got one with a decent screen in week 21, after going through too many of them. I'm not sure if the quality is improved. I think that Apple knows that its QC will be crap at the beginning of a release, because they're cranking them out for mass consumption. It's probably cheaper for them to just sell as many as they can, and replace the ones that people complain about. After "reconditioning", the returned ones just go out and either get sold as refurbished, or used as replacements.

Another reason why unless you are getting a BTO, it is better to just buy from a place that has a better return policy. Their 14 day return policy is complete joke.

Built to order. If you are getting a stock one and you can get it from a store with a better return policy like Best Buy in the US, then that's the way to go. Best Buy is at least 30 days, and you can just bring it back to them, instead of going through all the crap with Apple Care and the Apple Store that way.

The problem with going through a store like Best Buy is that it takes a bit of time for them to get some stock built up. But by the time they do, it's always possible that Apple will have worked out these stupid issues. So if you're one of those people that needs the new toy immediately, then that won't work so well. 😉

I know that it can be hard to wait. I was bit by the "new toy" bug with the new iPad. I bought one on the first day of release, and it was complete garbage.

the most frustrating thing about this is despite this being an apple hosted forum, no one from apple has come on here and made any official response as to what is happening.

I know this is normal, and have seen the same at Sony and Asus, however, at those companies forums, occasionally an employee will speak up and act as a spokesperson on the issue being discussed.

I am also still totally confused that apple dosent ensure that people who raise an issue of ir get a Samsung replacement. As a former Quality Director in the pharmaceutical industry, It amazes me that a high profile company like apple, who rely on reputation to sell their products, let's a complaint list like this get to 67 pages and many thousands of dollars worth of replacement shipments, without a single visible comment like "we are aware and will fix it"

The lack of response means I will not keep a defective unit and hope they will fix it in future, I will only accept a good screen or my money back at this point. I can't trust apple's good faith to sort it later, as they have my money I want the product they promised now (not in some unspoken future) or the money back.

Shame that customers have to get to this point. I like apples products (which is why I am writing this on my iPad and enjoy my iPhone 4s). But I expect consistent quality for the price premium else I may as well buy a cheaper

And I am dreading the " your holding it wrong" type of fix. We may hear "you need to have screen brightness at maximum of 50%, must never use a grey background and squint your eyes" as apple's "fix" in future ;)
