MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I agree with your post though I'm weary of Best Buy.

I guess it's all a lottery with Apple nowadays, I got the "new toy bug" like you call it on my iPad 3 and also bought it the same day it was released. It was flawless in every way.

I get that. I'm not a big fan of Best Buy just lately. But it's all about the return policy when it comes to these things, and theirs is a LOT better than Apple's.

Just as an aside, Apple didn't invent the 'retina' display technology, Sharp did, though Apple bought their patents :)

So yes you are right, Samsung couldn't use them in their laptops without apple's permission (and pigs might fly lol)

However, Samsungare developing a newer version of the Amoled tech that they use in their phones, expect to see a Retina competitor in near future.

However, for now we okay Apple's quality lottery if you want a super high resolution 15" laptop :(

Hi Guys,

I suppose I may simply be one of the lucky few.

I have LG screen, build week 23. Running Mountain Lion.

I have tried every method mentioned in this topic thread to induce the IR phenomena, however, I am just not seeing it. Even tried the checkerboard method. Tried different brightness settings, different color backgrounds, different "set" times from 20 minutes to over an hour for allowing an image to remain on the desktop. Still nothing. The display looks the same before and after.

This is truly perplexing!

Aren't apple cinema displays made with LG panels? I've been reading up on these new korean knockoffs that use the same LG panels as the ACD do, and yes theyre also IPS. so maybe LG just ***** at making IPS panels in general?

Dunno how to check it, but you are on to something, "persistance" is an IPS panel thing (rMBP the first MBP with an IPS panel), and apparently Samsung is better at making this type of panel.

Could you please stop updating your perfect faulty list all the time ?

That list isn't even correct ! The week of production has got noting to do with a panel being faulty or not since the panels were not manufactured in the same week as the actual unit.

I will stop, but only because there's a clear pattern. As we can see from this last update, there are multiple faulty LG displays for nearly every build week now.

On the contrary, there weren't any signs of faulty Samsungs after I started collecting data. I know I've seen a couple in the earlier stages of this thread, but not afterwards.

So, this is the last update of faulty or perfect display stats I'll provide:

LG week unknown (9x)

LG week 23 (3x)

LG week 24 (4x)

LG week 26 (5x)

LG week 29 (2x)

LG week 30 (3x)

LG week 31 (2x)

LG week 32 (3x)

LG week 33 (2x)

Unknown week 24

LG week unknown (2x)

LG week 23

LG week 24

LG week 25

LG week 26 (3x)

LG week 29

LG week 32 (2x)

LG week 33 (3x)

Samsung week unknown (2x)

Samsung week 23

Samsung week 30 (2x)

Samsung week 32

Samsung week 33 (3x)

Find out your build week: http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php Put the serial in the top left corner bar

Find out your display manufacturer: Open Terminal, copy & paste:

ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

and then press Enter. If the result starts with LP it's an LG, if it starts with LSN it's a Samsung.
