MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

DrSly/Picnaut - yea, if apple care won't help I will probably do that. and if that doesnt work, I will do all I can to spread the word about that specific location. There is an excellent location 7 or so miles away that I wouldn't mind driving to for good service, and I'm sure others will feel the same.

I'll keep you all posted...thanks for the support people!

Received my rMBP 2.7/16/768 today.

Been reading these posts for days now, couldn't wait to test. Somehow I knew it was going to be an LG display, not sure why, guess I'm just pessimistic.

Sure enough, it is. I'm week 33 as well.

Having followed the travails of everyone here, my inclination is to just return it and not go through the hassles. Right now, the screen looks beautiful, but for many, the problem presented after 14 days. Also, even if IR doesn't occur, I don't have a Samsung for comparison with regard to color/contrast/brightness. I don't want to have an inferior screen, even without IR.

Would you guys recommend returning it? My concern is how long do you wait to re-purchase. It seems clear that you cannot request a Samsung, and I don't like the lottery of hoping you get one. It seems clear that many have had MULTIPLE replacements, all LG. Do you wait for a formal recall from Apple (that will likely never come), or do you just wait several months until they have worked this out. Not sure of the right answer.

I should add that I have an iMac currently, so it's not my primary computer.

Thanks everyone!

I have a question about IR and how the images are. So if I was to do the test and theres a ghost image, is it suppose to go away after a couple of minutes or does it stay on there permanently? I've done the test and IR is there, but after a minute or so, its not there anymore. Would that constitute me having a bad screen?

A screen where the IR lasts a long time. If you crank the brightness up, pick a medium grey background, launch safari and disable auto dimming I think in most cases you will see a barely visable image of the safari screen still showing on the medium grey background. It should completely vanish in a few minutes.

How was the display colour? I have a Retina MacBook Pro with the LG panel and I find the white point is almost red/magenta.

Here's an interesting observation - look at the glowing Apple logo on the back of the system - it's pink! This is the native backlight colour of the display.

What are people seeing with the Samsung panels? Are they still IPS-based panels, as I understood that this was patented technology developed by LG and was not available to Samsung?

no, I meant they wont offer me refund or exchange on my third faulty unit. I can buy more for sure, but why the heck would I want to do that? 😝

Well, instead of doing exchanges with "geniuses" that won't acknowledge the issue you simply just keeping returning and rebuying until you get a unit you are satisfied with. I guess you must be beyond your 14 days so then you are stuck.

I just got off the phone with them, and they told me to go into an Apple Store and they'll fix it. I told him that it should be replaced since its only a week old. He then said that thats probably what they're going to do. He actually told me that it was a known problem and that its a hardware issue, not any firmware issue where some have mentioned on here. But I guess thats what some of the so-called geniuses are saying at the store. Hopefully, this will be a smooth transaction.

Can't you just order a new one and send this one back? I guess that they won't do an advanced replacement for you. I guess the problem with the whole return/reorder thing is that it takes for friggin ever for returns to get back to Apple. I sent an MBA for return on August 6th. The return was completed today. Ten days to go from Illinois to Georgia. I wonder if they just gave it to a bike messenger to carry it there. Anyway, with the amount of time it takes to return one, the whole buy/return thing means that you'll have two of them on your credit card. Which kinda *****.

I'm amazed at the varying levels of service that people are getting. It's anywhere from amazing customer service, to dismal customer service. And some are saying that it's firmware, some hardware, and some that it is a non-issue. Just like any other big company, I guess.

Thanks so much! I decide to return this beauty. Get tired to go through the whole rMBP thing.

BTW, I uploaded a new clear version of video. Anyone should be able to see the right corner of the window will tear as moving. All operation was done under Recovery partition with the latest version of Mountain Lion 10.8.

ps. video should be available after 25 mins.

That has nothing to do with the display. That behavior is caused by software that has disabled sync to vertical refresh. I guess that's the mode that the recovery partition boots into, for whatever reason.

Once again, the 'tearing' issue has nothing to do with the display, it would happen on any display that had sync to vertical refresh turned off in software.
