MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.


After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).


Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

How about pulling your finger out. You guys are looking more like Microsoft everyday.


We've witnessed 3 different manufactures of panels in this thread alone. Samsung, LG, AUO ( I think it was right?). Any who commented on the AUO screens said universally they were garbage.


Those commenting on LG screens a majority (greater than 50%) have claimed they have issues (but having said that this is a IR complain thread).


So where are the hordes of Samsung panel guys complaining?


I can't believe you are sticking LG screens that aren't as good as Samsung's in what appears to be the majority of your computers. If anything it would be SMART business sense to have those that complained of IR targeted in the system and ensured they are sent a Samsung screen.


That way those that are more prone to noticing stuff like us are happy and those that won't notice won't care.


I also spoke to a Applecare guy somewhere in Asia today and asked him if he was aware there were 3 different screen manufacturers and that this was a problem for some. Usual company line.

I could tell it was rehearsed as when I got specific regards certain things he answered with general stuff like "Manufacturers in Asia" "Warehousing in Asia"


You mean SHenzhen and then Shanghai yes? "Our warehouses in Asia"


Not quite sure why all the secrets on that one lol.

Actually computers are cheaper then they use to be. Wasn't uncommon to spend $5000 on a Apple computer setup not too long ago. Now they push the edge of what can be done. Retina displays are very rapidly taking over the marketplace, be it phones, tablets and now laptops. So Apple is not a rebel by going out on a limb to see if people will want these products?

I agree, all in all Apple computers have come down in price a lot. I remember my first PowerBook 17 inch was easily 5000USD. But it's build quality was outstanding minus the bad rubber feet. I also miss being able to reinstall the OS and preserve my user account, apps, and settings. That was a nice way to get a fresh set of OS files.


But as Apple heads off into becoming a phone company, the PC side is going to go down a road that puts them on par with all the other brands. The only difference (other than cosmetic) will be the OS.

Please let me know what does (2x), (3x) mean because I know the serial number of the MacBook Pro in apple store but I didn't still buy it so I went to http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php and put the serial number & it told me week 30 but you have both week 30 Samsung and lg so I'm mixed up, PLLLLEEEAASE HELP!!!!

Got a call from executive relations today, They're saying they understand my wish to be able to return the display rather than repair it, and that theyre going to speak to the engineering dept, and get back to me. Feeling a lot more optimistic as they really listened and seemed to care... Definitely advise composing a polite letter (with examples of what you work on if you have them, I showed them the game I released this year, and they mentioned that they had checked it out, and we're glad I was evangelising the Mac as a game platform etc.)


Whether this translates into the advance replacement I'm after, we'll have to see... And as to what screen will be on that replacement, well that's the lottery I guess...

On today I received my rMBP number 5 :


-the first one had 6-7 white stuck pixels (BTO : 2,3, 16GB, 256)

-the second one had 2 black dead pixels + IR (LG screen) (entry model)

-the third one had severe IR (LG screen, week 24) (entry model)

-The fourth one had IR + spots on the screen and yellow tint (LG screen, week 29) (entry model)


The number 5 has LG screen (week 33) and has yellow tint and severe IR (it's a BTO : 2,6, 16GB, 256)


Until now I haven't had a Samsung Display but I can say these rMBPs are the worst Macbooks I have ever seen. This poor quality for a 2500 euros computer is a scandal ! And i can't understand why Apple is continuing utilizing the "garbage" LG screens.


I'll ask for a refund again T.T


Unfortunately I'm an italian publisher for comics and I absolutely need for a new Apple laptop, so I'll have to continue ordering rMBP until I'll find a good screen...

I'm starting to lose my patience. I noticed the IR after I was past the 14 day period and when I called the first time I was told that it was to be expected and that I needed to set the display to go to sleep shortly after I finish using it and to set my screen saver so there would not be any static images on the screen and thats all that could be done. I was not satisfyed with this but knew I would not get anywhere with that advisor so I hung up and called back. That time I was connected with someone that said it was infact an hardware issue but since I was out of the 14 day period all they could do is set up a repair. I sent it in and a few days later I got it back, checked out the Product Repair Summaryand noticed that they had only replaced the logic board. Within 5 minutes I was able to tell that it did not resolve my problem. I called them and they told me that they would set up another repair and it would be white gloved. Last night I received a voicemail from someone at Apple saying that he saw that my rMBP had shipped and asked if I could call back and go over the repairs, however I didn't have time to call back but I figured it was no big deal and that I would just call them back today at some point after I picked it up from FedEx. When I opened the box, I looked over the Product Repair Summary to try to find what had been replaced but could not find anything. When I got home I looked at the PRS and noticed that it said "After comprehensive testing, our technicians were able to diagnose your product's issue(s). After contacting you about your specific repair situation, you chose to cancel the existing repair process. Your product is being returned you without and repair performed." I had received not a single phone call from anyone at Apple at any point during the week that they had my computer. I called this morning to find out what happened but apparently only "Patrick" will be able to tell me what is going on. So now I am stuck playing phone tag with someone.
