MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.


After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).


Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

If you have the money then by all means please go ahead, order five or even ten if you like and pick the best out of it. The thing is that not everybody can afford to do that and it is a big inconvenience to us when we get replacements that are faulty and/or still having issues. I'm bringing my rMBP in for a repair next week due to the bad squeaking sound on few of my keyboard keys plus i will ask them to inspect my chatbox text ghosting issue and the bad scrolling lag in safari + spaces. Good luck in your rMBP purchase, i hope you do get a Samsung screen with your orders.

Since I need a laptop for school, and I don't have time to order multiple over and over again before school starts, I think I might order two or even three today, and then hopefully at least ONE can be a Samsung. I can then return the others.


Been wonderig about two things, first being with Apple setting up some standards for determining what consitiutes a valid claim of this issue. Second how to deal with customers that purchase multiple units only to return them. I've not seen any refurbished MBPr's online, so have to wonder what happens to these laptops?

I have the LG LP154WT1-SJA1 week 29 (July) and I can easily see IR when testing for it, BUT i can't seem to replicate this problem when I am on "Recovery Mode" (Restarting after pressing Command+R). I simply can't see any IR at all there, even if I leave a black bright screen for minutes and then move it on the gray background. This looks to me like some weird energy settings. Also, the screen behaves in a oddly manner, the lower botton of the screen leaves a pixelated trail when I move a window, this doesn't happen on the upper half of the screen. Again this odd bahaviour only happens on the "Recovery Mode", I don't get the pixelated trail on the normal boot scree, but I do get the IR...


Sounds like there is more to it...


Anyway, the screen is great overall,and the retention doesn't last more than 20 seconds, maybe 30 seconds at most. Did you notice any other issues with the LG panel compared with the Sansung, like resolution (small fonts resolution...)?

Thanks I know that code that you enter in terminal but I want to know about the weeks because the user "stecube" posted a list of faulty and perfect panels of lg and Samsung and said: Ex. lg week (30) (3x) , Samsung (also 30) (2x) so I'm confused because the serial of retina MacBook Pro that I want to buy is also week 30 so I DON'T KNOW IS IT SAMSUNG OR LG (I don't want to buy it. Find it lg, and then come back to apple to change it

Three questions that I have seen threads to but can't quite understand

1) what does 'IR' actually Stand for?

2) what and how does one do the checkerboard test

3) can anyone find that list of weeks that lg and Samsung batches were faulty?

The reality is this: a lot of customers are not going to notice this, because they don't know what to look for. If we (the subscribers to this thread and others on the subject) are placated, this will all die down and a lot of people will happily continue using their crummy LG-display-carrying rMBPs in blissful ignorance. However, if this issue starts getting more press in the wider media, a whole bunch of people are going to start checking their machines and complaining, and Apple will have an even larger, more expensive problem on their hands. Nip it in the bud now Apple, if only for the sake of your bottom-line.

1. Ir stands for image retention


2. Set your background for the darkest grey of the solid colours available in settings. Put a picture on display (can be a webpage like google search or anything with range of text and colour, or use black and white checkerboard), leave picture up for 5-15 mins, then minimise it, see if you can still see the text / checker on the grey background.


3. From what I have seen on this forum, Apple are using mixed manufacturers in all weeks, so you can't guarantee whether you get LG or Samsung for any week. Most LG ones seem to have the problem right away, or in first few weeks no matter what week they are from even including week 32/33 which are the latest ones off the line.
