MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I remember Goldstar, just took a brief look at Wikipedia. Seems they had a few divisions since the 40s when they first started doing business. L is for LUCKY and G is for GOLDSTAR. The lucky side was famous for toothpaste and detergent, while the Goldstar has made consumer electronics since the 50s. The G side has had a lot of failed partnerships, including one with Nortel who went bankrupt soon after.

If anyone is new to this discussion and do not want to read the overwhelming number previous posts, I've constructed a webpage.

It will summarize the issue, determine if you have the issue, and give you solution methods.

And for others, I'm soon going to be collecting data so I can do some analysis on this matter.

It will be on the same webpage. I'll update you when it is available for submitting info.

Cheers!

Good info!

One comment though: you mention requesting a Samsung screen as a replacement, but I don't think this is possible. When I tried to get my screen replaced and specifically asked what brand it was, they said there was no way to tell until after it had been installed. And unless they see a problem that would justify another replacement, they won't replace it again (and an LG screen by itself isn't justification for a replacement).

Dont want to sound like an old man (i'm actually 29) but I very much long for the days (that i've heard about and not necessaril experienced but seen enough to give it some credibility) of REAL quality.

People replace appliances these days every few years via planned obsolence etc. I remember my grandparents used to have fridges and other appliances that were 10+ years old and still going strong versus complaints of recent stuff from LG or whatever other company that looked AWESOME compared to 10+ year old fridges but would develop issues within 2-3 years.

How as a society did we allow that to be ok?

I mean clearly profit driven manufacturers clued into the fact that there was less profit in making quality to last stuff than there was in making decent stuff that will last at least a few years but ultimately burn out.

There could be a very long discussion on this topic. I do agree that things have changed, but some sort of balance still exists.

For example, I bought an Apple Laser printer (or HP LasterJet) many years ago for $2,000. Sure, it lasted a long time and was built like a tank, but now you can get a laster printer for a maybe $200 or $300. The newer printer may break in a few years, but when you consider the overall cost/year, I'm not sure things are much different than they used to be. The lower price and shorter lifespan of devices has replaced higher prices and longer lifespans.

But I do agree that when paying top $ for an rMBP, you should be getting the "best of the best". And the biggest problem at the moment with the rMBP is that some are getting the "best of the best" (if they get a Samsung screen) and some are not (if the get an LG or some other brand I saw mentioned in this thread). That's the real shame with this current issue....the quality is random for the customer, which is why Apple better figure out how to clean up this mess, and the sooner the better.

I'm also experiencing graphical tearing. My rMBP is going back and they asked me to do a PRAM reset (god knows why but I did it anyways). Since that time rMBP has been slow to shutdown.

I also experience this (see image links attached).

I'm not sure if

A) Its a safari issue

B) PRAM reset nonsense related

C) this rMBP in particular.

This issue presents after lets say 6-8 hours of usage (variable) and the only way to fix is to restart the computer and your golden for another half day.

I was under the impression LG was an up and coming consumer electronic firm, but they are actually Goldstar. Darn marketing department got us again. 😉

Per Wikipedia:

GoldStar was an electronics company established in 1958. The corporate name was changed to LG Electronics and LG Cable in 1995 after merging with Korean competitor Lucky. LG Cable was changed to LS Cable in 2005.

They come a very long way since then. 😉
