Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Is there a way we can start to figure out if we can use serials numbers on the boxes to find a samsung display?

Maybe if everyone could list what screen they have and the serial numbers on their boxes, we can start to establish a pattern between LG and Samsung.

Received my second MBP 2 days ago. Confirmed it was an LG, and like all LG displays, this one shows IR. Using the grey background, I can read the content of browser windows when the lock screen is up. So not only is it annoying, but also a privacy issue.

This one is week 34 (August). 2.3/16GB/256 BTO.

Not sure if that would help much.

There are two dozen major components and several hundred minor ones if you break it down. The serial number would be significantly longer than it is now to be able to reference every component's manufacturer.

The only way to link SN and display vendor is to use Apple's internal systems to identify the machine and all its details. Those tools are not available to you and I. There was talk of some system called 'Ripley' somewhere around here. I'm not too sure how real that is.

The assembly week or plant might provide a pattern.

I just sent my 1st replacement (Samsung) back to Apple due to pressure mark. Now will have to wait another week or so for a new one from China. But I don't have much hopes, probably will get an LG with Image Retension...Hopeless fight.

I talked to Apple Store (retail) and Apple Store (online), in case of the latter with management representatives. They have been all exceptionally helpful with multiple replacements and the eventual refund but were not able to have any components customized outside of what is available publicly.

For my custom order unfortunately it's not possible to pick one at the store either.

If Apple Store agree to open boxes for you until you get a Samsung that would be pretty good.

I would imagine after Samsung and LG produce the part, it is shipped to another facility to be distributed to assembly lines. If there's only one, then there would be no pattern to find. If they ship in numbers regardless of vendor that also means no pattern. Why I emphasized on 'might'.

Not all the LG panels have problems.

After 30 days for my first Retina and two days for the second everything is OK. Both have LG panels.

Especially the first is 24/7 running from day one until now! It passed the test numerus times.

Thanks for rubbing it in Apple.

I am the one who posted originally about Ripley and have received various MacBooks. First let me tell you that its very difficult to even get a manager to admit to having this system so you would need to go to one of the Apple stores and try to find a real friendly manager. I have a few friends who work at Apple and this is the only reason I even know about. I assure you it is real. FYI, I went to the Apple store last week to exchange my Base Retina for the Mid. BIG MISTAKE! The one I returned had a Samsung display but the new one I received had a LG. I opened up iCal and in a matter of 4 minutes there was IR as plain as day. I pointed it out to the manager of the store and he tried to tell me that it was part of the technology! I showed him all of these blogs and he wanted no part of it. He went to the back and after about a half an hour he came out with another unit and told me that was it, if it was not to my liking that I would not be able to exchange it again as I have had way too many returns in the past (other items) and could either live with it or get a refund. I opted for a gift card with the hopes that Apple would fix this but I am not that confident they will at this time. Its going to take pressure from the Tech media at very least to get them to fix this issue. I urge everyone on this site to stay on the subject at hand and maybe we can collectively find a way to get some action. As for the Ripley system, he flat out denied any knowledge of it and I could not throw my friends under the bus who have helped me in the past with the Ripley system. Once again, it is a real system so try your best to get someone to use it for you.

I see. Either way this won't be applicable to my custom order. Hopefully it'll help others.

Maybe as more new and existing Retina owners notice this it would become more public. I've seen average users live with things much worse than this though.

Crap, i think if they replace the whole unit is just best option. IMHO, replacing the screen on machine which is only 1.5 months is crazy. Once they start fidgeting on your machine, chances are quite large that something else will break as well.. In my previous 2009 MBP was repaired 5 times, of which 3 of them with logic board replacements.  Whole process took 4 months,  but they finally replaced the machine. It all started with a faulty headphone jack That's the one I sold to get my rMBP..

So I really hope AppleCare will replace and not fix my machine tomorrow.. You'd expect better service when your buy a $2000+ machine, it aint no 300 dollar pc..
