Since I have a back up on an external drive, I went ahead and downloaded the newest version from:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

When I ran the install (fingers crossed) it acted just like an automatic update. New version installed, no impact to settings/library/etc. Problem solved. Or at least worked around. What a pain.

Now if I could just get rid of the "ghost songs" on my iPod. When I connect to iTunes and go to my device, it shows two copies of every song I have bought online. One is normal and playable. The other is grayed out and has the waiting to download symbol next to it, even though its clearly not waiting to download.

Turbohat,

you shouldnt need to uninstall iTunes. Simply download the installer from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and it will update your current installation to the new version of iTunes. As someone else said previously, theres always a slight chance something could go wrong so its good to have a back up, but that's true whenever doing anything on a Mac or PC.

For what it's worth, I did it just yesterday and it worked like a charm.

Good luck!

im running windows 7 and was able to get the latest update for itunes. the only thing that im having a problem with this new update is that i cant use my wifi to sync my 2 ipod touches that i own. any ideas on what i can do to fix it? ive checked all my settings including firewall. the only way i can sync my touches is via usb cable. the touches say it will resume sync when the computer is available.

I got the same problem as everyone elese on this thread. The Apple software update pop-up window is just blank for new updates. Is it possible the last batch of Microsoft security updates affected the Apple update software? I know there is a newer iTunes 10.6.3 available.

I am running Windows XP 32-bit SP3 on an AMD Athlon 7750 dual core CPU with Radeon HD4770 graphics card. I have no major itunes issues until now..

I'll pile in here too. My family has long expected problems with iTunes upgrades/downloads (XP,Vista, W7) but it seems that over the past year things got better...until now. While the the previous update downloaded/installed just fine, this one (10.6.3) merely presents the download window. When the "Download iTunes" is clicked the window closes and nothing happens. I get the same results on a W7 64-bit desktop and a W7 32-bit netbook.

I haven't tried the apple.com/itunes/download link yet...and I shouldn't have to...
