Spilled water in my MacBook Pro its been slow ever since fixable or not?

Hi All

My daughter spilt a full glass over my MBP, to cut a long story short, dried it, aired it all out and after a day or two started working again.

The issue that i now face is since then (1 year ago i would say) my Mac has been really slow performance wise, ages to open anything considering it has an i5 processor. Crashes frequently or freezes for long period, is this all due to the water spilt into it (yes i know obvious but need to make sure)? I have wiped the laptop and started from new and hasnt really made any difference.

If it is the due to the water damage is there something that i can do?

Many Thanks

With that much water spilled, it's a miracle the machine is running at all, much less for 1 year. You've gotten very lucky. Water does serious damage to the electronics inside a computer.

If the machine was off when the spill happened, and was allowed to thoroughly dry for at least several days, if not a full week, before being turned back on again, that would explain why it's still working. (Plus, of all the liquids you could have spilled, water is probably the least damaging.) However, there still could be corrosion and other minor damage that is causing your problem.

Of course, it's also possible that the water has nothing to do with it. Try some of the tips in the Mac OS X Speed FAQ. If nothing there helps, it's probably a hardware issue.

I wonder if you actually did fully dry it out. Maybe do like they do on tv with wet phones- bury it in rice.

I think that after a year it's fully dry! 😁

Also, note that rice may work fine with phones, but it is a horrible idea with laptops! You really don't want rice getting inside the keyboard, optical drive, vents and other openings. That can worsen the problems, especially if the rice gets inside and gets wet... that can leave sticky starch residue on sensitive electronic components, which is very, very bad.

It would be hard to argue against what you said! Except the part about it being absolutely dry... water is tenacious at remaining where it is..it may eveporate but in an enclosure like a computer, it will find a cool enough spot a few inches away to recondense, further from the hot battery or drive...

How about- place it in the sun, turne off of course, for a few hours, and pack it wth the dessicant pack it arrived with to cool....?

Or like someone already said: to apple store quick....

A computer is not a sealed environment that can trap water, there's air flow. There are even fans that are blowing to circulate air. It's been a year, it's dry.

As to putting it in the sun for a few hours, that's more extremely bad advice! Depending on conditions (temperature, time of day, air quality, etc), the MBP could be damaged by such treatment. Same goes for putting it in the oven, so don't even go there!

Thanks to everyone for their replies never been in a forum where people respond so quickly so kudos to you all!

Knowing that the inside is most likely dry I guess the next thing to do is to take it to the apple store (hate going to central London!) but again thanks for all your views never knew i could dry a product with rice lol-learn something knew everyday!

jus to ask what exactly could the store do to help me if there is water damage?

Hi, I am having the same problem discussed in your original question- but my question for you is did you ever take it to apple, and what seemed to be the problem, and how much did they charge for the repair? And did they solve the problem for you or did it occur again later on? I already have to replace the battery from my spill which is pretty expensive so I wonder if it's even worth it to get it fixed or if i'd just be better off with a new laptop altogether.
