Upgrading problem iphoto vers 9.3

Hi

Can anyone help ?

I upgraded to Iphoto vers. 9.3 and when opening my library i was asked to upgrade the photo library.

So i accepted. It now runs throug 9 steps but when reaching step 5 after 98% it just stays there and nothing happens.

It is a large library but I left it for like 8 hours and still the same. Now I have uninstalled Iphoto and reinstalled it and still the same.

What to do ?

Thanks if anybody can come up with a solution.

Best regards

N

Terence,

Thanks, I am well aware of that I will lose everything but the pictures, but I tried everything eles and failed.

I tried to revert the iPhoto to previous version but it says it cannot do it because the file is locked.

So, I checked and made sure it is unlocked, but still the same message.

I probably am not taking a right step. Would you pelase be so kind to give me the right steps?

Currently I have the newly built library but obviously not the same.

I would love to have my old library back.

So, your help is greately appreciated since Apple does not seem to care about this.

Thank you again in advance.

Terence,

I have to change my question now that I realized that Time Machine just deleted all of my backup files due to not enough space. I stopped the Time Machine thinking it will stay off but it restarted by itself as it is set to back up my entire computer every hour - I cannot figure out how to set it so that it would run once a day instead.

Having huge volume in trash (due to the trashed iPhoto app and trashed copy of my pictures) plus having extra copy of my old photo library, it run out of space and deleted pretty much all of my backup files. Luckily I still have my old iPhoto library, but I no longer have the older version of iPhoto app.

Do you know where I can get the older version of iPhoto app online?

Sorry to bother you with this, I will look for it by myself, but I thought I'd ask you since you seem to know a lot.

Thanks.

OK, Terence,

the file I found is updater and it won't of course update the newer version.

It seems I have to deal with the v9.3 with my stripped photo library.

I wish I waited for your answer before I did anything... I'll have to take this as a good lesson for patience 😊

Thanks anyway, I hope many others waited for your advice.

My advice to others is to make sure you turn off the Time Machine when your computer is not in the prefered stage.

Hi Koh Yin

It seems like what Old Toad says is working.

I have just uninstalled Iphoto and reinstalled vers. 9.2.3.

Opened Iphoto Library Manager. Selected the library that i actually tried to update in Iphoto vers 9.3.

Clicked rebuild library and now it opened Iphoto and has right now started importing the library.

So i cross my fingers and hope everything is back to normal in a couple of hours.

Thanks a lot Old Toad for the advice it is greatly appreciated.

I have made a new library it the same results.

Give this a try: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:

1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your

User/Home(User uploaded file)/Library/ Preferences folder.

2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your

User/Home(User uploaded file)/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

User uploaded file

3 - launch iPhoto and try again.

NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

the only thing missing is that the amount of pictures and the number of events use to show besides events and photos - is there a fix for that?

iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> General: 'Show Item Counts'

is there a way to keep yur pictures in finder unlocked all the time?

Yes. It's called running a Referenced Library. It's more work, can cause problems later if you move your library or migrate to a new machine, and means no extra functionality at all.

Hi NB and Old Toad,

Thank you for your updates and advices.

NB, please let me know how it went.

Toad, it looks like your kind advice seem to be working for some others, but my home directory does not look like the image you have given. I am the only user on my computer and there is no separate Library under User directory and I could locate neither of the files that you adviced to delete.

I also lost the older version of iPhoto App (my backup file on the time machine was erased due to not enough memory -- I copied older version of iPhoto library and I guess that took too much memory), so I don't know how to revert to the previous version of iPhoto at this point.

I just upgraded my spouse's iPhoto without any issue. The photo library of my spoous's computer only had 2000 photos.

From what I am reading, I have a feeling that only those of us who has 15000 plus photos are suffering this issues. So, if it is just a size issue, I would think there would be an easy solution. I wonder why Apple won't do something about it instead of letting the customers going through this trouble half-blinded.

The very reason I converted to Apple from Microsoft was to avoid this type of technical issues and the frustration of not getting any help from the tech supports. 😠

On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library

Size doesn't matter. I upgrade 2 x 40k libraries with no issues at all. People whit smaller libraries have had the problem.

Hi Koh Yin

I uninstalled iPhoto and reinstalled iPhoto vers. 9.2.3. Then I used iPhoto Library Manager to rebuilt the library that I actually tried to update to 9.3. It took a looooong time but now im on vers. 9.2.3. and everything works fine. The only thing missing is the two Books I made. They are gone. I have not worked with places and faces in iPhoto so obviously nothing is missing here. But I would guess that data would be lost here as well ?

All the best

Not sure if I should post here but here goes. Upgraded to 9.3. on my wife's new imac. Yes it wanted to upgrade the library but in my case it worked ok. (About11k pics). Only problem found so far is as follows:

opening several photos in edit mode to compare them. I have, say, 2 or 3 photos open. cmd click another and it should add to the group displayed. Up to 4 do but...... selecting a pic to open from the strip at the bottom only shows a small batch of pics. the grey dash used to pull the strip along is not there. I can get it to show sometimes - it appears that if I cmd click a 5th pic the dash pops up briefly and sometimes I can grab it if I'm quick! Incidently 9.2.3 lets me open 8 pics to compare in edit.

I still have 9.2.3 on my macBook Pro so I shall stay there meantime. Fortunately I had just copied the entire iphoto library across so I have an identical copy there as time machine and other back ups on externals.

PS If I go to time machine back ups can I roll back the application (to 9.2.3) or just the library?
