Apple Software Update Blank List Issue

Not sure what changed but it is now working, at least on the one machine that I tried this morning. The win 7 64 bit machine that was not working last week worked this morning. The 10.6.3.25 update appeared in the list and installed without a problem. Not sure what could of happened to change it but I know for sure that last Wednesday it was showing up blank.

Nothing on that PC has changed that I know of, it is one of my users but they do not have the rights to do updates or change much of anything. I push out Microsoft updates via VMware VCenter (used to be Shavlik). I even showed her how the update came up blank last week on Wednesday. I was on vacation Thursday and Friday so I did not look at it until this morning again.

I just checked 3 other machines and they are all working properly, I had not looked at these other machines last week because the people using them were quite busy and I could not interrupt them.

I have one machine that has not been on for a couple of weeks, it is Win 7 64 bit, I just turned it on and iTunes is at version 10.6.1.7. I opened the Apple Updater and it was BLANK saying to select the updates I want to install. Back to the old problem on this machine.

The latest batch of Microsoft updates are not yet installed on this machine so it is not caused by the latest updates from MS. I'm going to install the updates and see what happens after that.

ahhhhhhhhh still not working for my MBP,,, seems like the the Apple Software Update doesnt do the update-search at all, the green process bar doesnt move, and just disappeared and shows the blank list

Same here. Still no change this evening. Apple Software Update for Windows still doesn't execute the normal search for available updates properly. Windows 7 running in a Boot Camp partition.

I tried another "Repair" re-install of Apple Software Update for Windows. It made no difference.

If I do the check in iTunes, it appears to do a quick search and come back saying my iTunes is up to date (which is correct).

The last install made by Apple Software Update was this new iTunes on 6/11.

I also checked in the Windows 7 Event Logs for items including "apple", and didn't find anything useful. In particular, there does NOT seem to be a new event thrown to the logs if I run Apple Software Update and watch it fail.

Apple Support Communities is having "scheduled maintenance" done at 10PM tonight. Who knows, maybe they will use this maintenance down time to set a few things straight and the ASU will be magically working tomorrow. I know it's a long shot, but one can always hope.

Same issue, also Win 7 x64. Re-installed Windows just to be sure, to no effect.

I haven't been able to update iTunes through iTunes NOR the Apple Software Update program since the most recent iTunes update was available.

With iTunes, as soon as I click to download, it accesses the store briefly, then nothing happens.

With Apple Software Update, the list is blank.

For me, I've wasted enough time on it, so I'm just going to wait and see like most people.

I was updating my mom's machine. It had an older version of Quicktime on it. I ran Apple Software Update, and to my surprise it worked. It had a couple of updates available, Bootcamp and and update to Software Update. I ran those and restarted. I then checked again, and there was a Quicktime update. I then installed that, got a prompt to restart, restarted, and Software Update hasn't worked since. I am guessing it had something to do with the latest Quicktime update and something it does to Software Update. What that 'something' is, I am not sure. I am fairly it was the Quicktime update that broke Software Update.

I too am having the blank list in Apple Software update on Windows.

Thanks for posting your solution. I was "kinda sorta" able to get my Apple Software Update working again in Windows XP SP3.

I had to click on the actual executable found in C:\Program Files\Apple Software Update\SoftwareUpdate.exe

I clicked on the Properties and then Compatibility. But was unable to find the other options you mentioned. I was logged in as the user, Administrator.

However, after I clicked on the OK button, read more posts, and then in frustration tried Apple Software Update again. It started working.

I really can't say that what changed, but hopefully this post will help others in the same situation.

Apple Software Update for Windows has "partially recovered" functionality in my setup (Windows 7 running in a Boot Camp partition).

Litterally NOTHING has changed in my setup since I booted up early this morning just to check if Apple Sofware Update was working. Since then, all I've done was shut down, and now boot up again.

Upon further testing, I've discovered that repeated running of Apple Software Update now works 50% of the time. The rest of the time it fails in the same manner as has already been described in this thread.

So it is kind of recuperating from its stroke. Again, I didn't do anything on my side that could have fixed it.

More seriously, it looks to me like the root cause of the problem must be in Apple's update servers, and that Apple is migrating a fix through their servers. Slowly. So whether Apple Software Update for Windows works now, on any given trial, depends on the luck of the draw as to which server you happen to connect to each time it is run.

My recommendation now would be that if it fails for you, just try again. Repeatedly. Or wait for Apple to finish migrating whatever fix is apparently in process.

I should add that if I'm correct, then your experience will likely vary according to where you are located, as the choice of servers to connect to on any given running of Apple Software Update likely depends on your georgraphic location. And the order in which Apple is fixing their servers may not be uniform across all geographies.

In any event, I would expect they could update all their servers in just a few more days.
